Edgelands: Journeys Into England's True Wilderness | Paul Farley, Michael Symmons Roberts
2 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
The wilderness is much closer than you think. Passed through, negotiated, unnamed, unacknowledged: the edgelands - those familiar yet ignored spaces which are neither city nor countryside - have become the great wild places on our doorsteps. In the same way the Romantic writers taught us to look at hills, lakes and rivers, poets Paul Farley and Michael Symmons Roberts write about mobile masts and gravel pits, business parks and landfill sites, taking the reader on a journey to marvel at these richly mysterious, forgotten regions in our midst. Edgelands forms a critique of what we value as 'wild', and allows our allotments, railways, motorways, wasteland and water a presence in the world, and a strange beauty all of their own.

Mehso-so

Snapshots of the English Edgelands- the overlooked places between city and countryside, homes to industrial parks, boy racers, dens, pallets, service stations, piers and driving ranges. I'd put this aside half-read for several months - it just wasn't flowing for me- and was surprised to find the dry humour running through it when I picked it up again. Maybe I was reading it wrong, first time round! Finished for #24in48.

Magslhalliday Nice shot of Taunton! 8y
rockpools @Magslhalliday Ha! You're good! Not sure I'd recognise that as Taunton, and I only took the photo 2 days ago! 8y
Magslhalliday @RachelO I go up and down that track a lot! I'm in Exeter but work in Bristol and London! 8y
rockpools @Magslhalliday That would do it! I've only commuted in the opposite direction, so I'm very good on lumps of red rock in the Dawlish/Teignmouth area, not so good on Taunton outskirts! 8y
