Mary Ball Washington
Mary Ball Washington: The Untold Story of George Washington's Mother | Craig Shirley
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
The Mother of the Father of our Country. Mary Ball Washington was an unlikely candidate to be the mother of historys most famous revolutionary. In fact, George Washingtons first fight for independence was from his controlling, singular mother. Stubborn, aristocratic Mary Ball Washington was entrenched in the Old World ways of her ancestors, dismissing the American experiment even as her son led the successful rebellion against the crown. During his youth, ambitious George dove into the hard-scrabble work of a surveyor and rose through the ranks of the fledgling colonial army, even as his overprotective mother tried to discourage these efforts. Marys influence on George was twofold. Though she raised her eldest son to become one of the worlds greatest leaders, Mary also tried many times to hold him back. While she passed down her strength and individuality to George, she also sought to protect him from the risks he needed to take to become a daring general and president. But it was this resistance itself which fanned the spark of Georges independence into a flame. The constant tug of war between the two throughout the early years helped define Georges character. In Mary Ball Washington, New York Times bestselling author Craig Shirley uncovers startling details about the inner workings of the Washington family. He vividly brings to life a resilient widow who singlehandedly raised six children and ran a large farm at a time when most womens duties were relegated to household matters. Throughout, Shirley compares and contrasts mother and son, illuminating the qualities they shared and the differences that divided them. A significant contribution to American history, Mary Ball Washington is the definitive take on the relationship between George and Mary Washington, offering fresh insight into this extraordinary figure who would shape our nationand the woman who shaped him.

ValerieAndBooks @mrsmarch that should be interesting!! The one the DAR recommended on Pocahontas is on backorder from bookshop.org (and Amazon until December) ...wonder if it‘s because of DAR, or if it got on some recent Indigenous Peoples Day suggested reading lists. It‘s not a new release. 4y
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks I‘ve started reading Mary Ball.... and I‘m annoyed by what I feel was inferior editing. What did you think? 3y
ValerieAndBooks @mrsmarch I still haven‘t read this 😬🙊. But now you‘ve got me curious, and I‘ll pull it out of the TBR! 3y
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks My chapter is going to have a chapter book club on it in early June ahead of Craig Shirley speaking at book club during Congress. My regent was very impressed by last year‘s on Rush so she‘s keen to have more of us participate this year. 3y
ValerieAndBooks That‘s cool that your chapter discuss books 👍. My chapter librarian doesn‘t do much about books or recommendations. @mrsmarch 3y
mrsmarch @valerieandbooks I just finished this book. I was not very impressed. Do you want to attend our chapter's book club discussion? It's June 13 at 3 PM. 3y
ValerieAndBooks @mrsmarch thanks for the invite! I assume it‘s via zoom. I have it down on my calendar & if I can make it, I will. I promise to read this before then!! Right now, I just started the tagged book about Ethan Allen. One of my Patriot ancestors, Ezra Hickok was with him at Ticonderoga & is mentioned. I hope to do supps on Ezra & his Patriot son Durlin. But Ezra‘s service source needs citing and Durlin will be through a new child. Someday for sure !! 3y
ValerieAndBooks @mrsmarch you still have my email, right? 3y
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks I‘m pretty sure I do. I‘ll check. 3y
