Mr Wuffles ignores all the toys people buy for him. He's not lazy, he's just very picky. Now Mr Wuffles has the perfect toy and he's ready to play. But it's not really a toy at all. It's something much more interesting . . . 'Expertly imagined, composed, drawn and coloured, this is Wiesner at his best' - Kirkus (Starred Review)

Mr. Wuffles is picky about his toys. He‘s sure he‘s found the best ones (aliens with other-worldly language) lurking under the radiator. They belong to the tiny silver spaceship at the left in the pic. The story is told mostly with images. Wiesner is genius 🐈‍⬛🤗 🚀

This very imaginative Caldecott Award Winning SF text is a near wordless picture book that follows a stubborn cat not wanting to play with kitty toys but is more interested in playing with little spaceships and aliens. A good teaching strategy paired well with this book is an AS!

AlexRobinson It can be kind of confusing for students to “read” a wordless book, so getting to understand the mastermind behind the text is beneficial to their lesson pertaining to this book! Here is a resource on why author study‘s are important (https://www.readingrockets.org/books/authorstudy/reasons) as well as some tricks and tips on how to implement one in a lesson successfully (https://www.readingrockets.org/howto). 3y
AlexRobinson UDL‘s covering this lesson could be 1.1, 8.2, and 4.2 (offer ways of customizing the display of information, vary demands and resources to optimize challenge, and optimize access to tools and assistive technologies) while EL strategies involved could be: 3y
AlexRobinson 9, 14, 17, and 36 (teach note taking strategies, simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant, provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions, and ask numerous questions which require high level thinking responses). 3y

AlexRobinson I‘ll have to admit, it took a second getting used to this specific read but I think kids will enjoy the fun and abstract style of it! #ucflae3414sp21 3y
TabathaA First, love the picture. Would love to have been a fly on the wall when you took that picture! Also, I have grown to really enjoy books that have no, or limited, text. It is a great tool for a teacher to be able to show the students the same pictures and get their individual takes on what they viewed. It really provides insight into individual students' imagination. 3y
StephanyNunez I love that your cat look just like the one in the book! I like that you included resources to help teachers understand the importance of author studies and how to implement them. 3y
PatriciaS I love your presentation, your cat looks just like the one on the cover 📔, I love animals 3y
tclivio this picture is soooo cute! I love the idea of a wordless book. I would love to "read" this one day! Your UDL's align perfectly! 3y
Vanvlieta OMG yes. Your picture is AMAZINGG! (You know i love putting my fur babies into my litsy posts🤣) but what an interesting book, it would definitely bring out the imagination and creativity in your students. Thanks for sharing with us! 3y
Chaseb Seeing that your cat looks like the cover of the book is so cute and clever!! I really like that you included multiple UDL and EL strategies! Great job Alex! 3y
Emiranda This picture is everything!!!! Love your el and udl picks for this book! 3y
AlexRobinson @TabathaA thank you!! Yes I may or may not had a kitty photo shoot 😂😂 he is used to it! But I couldn‘t agree more! I am still finding a love for them but yes, it is a different take on “reading” and learning and you listed some fantastic benefits! 3y
AlexRobinson @StephanyNunez yes I feel like my cat Banditt might need a name change🙃😂 and of course! I hope they are of use! 3y
AlexRobinson @PatriciaS thank you!! I do as well and more importantly so do kids so I know if I was able to show this to a group of children they‘d love the text even more! 3y
AlexRobinson @tclivio haha thank you!!! Any excuse to throw my cat in a picture, I‘ll take it!😂 and yes there are some great articles (especially ones we‘ve read in class) that highlight the importance of wordless books! Although very “different” they have some amazing benefits! 3y
AlexRobinson @Vanvlieta girl SAME- my cats are practically models at this point 😂😂 and honestly if you have never picked up one of these books I highly suggest that you do! Incredibly interesting but I believe would be so fun in a classroom! 3y
AlexRobinson @Chaseb thank you chase!!! 💛 3y
AlexRobinson @Emiranda awww thank you! 3y
DrSpalding 18 comments! Your kitty photo shoot was obviously well received by the Litsy community. Good book selection and yes Bandit may need to be called Mr. Wuffles now.😂 3y

He may look cute and furry... but boy is he one feisty fella! This SF Caldecott award winning picture book by David Wiesner has few words.. but a lot to show! This book is about a cat who is mesmerized by a spaceship toy full of real aliens, but with Mr. Wuffles aggressive playing.. those aliens are in quite some danger. This books makes a great IR for students. #ucflae3414su20

bsiqueira https://www.hmhbooks.com/wiesner_dg.pdf This website provides a wonderful activity in which students can tell this story from Mr. Wuffles perspective. Due to the fact that there are minimal words, if the students independently read this book, they are able to create their own version with the pictures they have! 4y
bsiqueira The UDL strategy that would align with this lesson is 5.2 “Use multiple tools for construction and composition” which is what the students will do when creating their version of the story. An ESOL strategy that would work is #16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities! 4y
Emmaturtle3 Hey, I loved reading your post! I have yet to read this book and I‘m now excited to! I found your resource really interesting in the sense that the students are able to get a different perspective of the book. Your UDL and ESOL aligned with with your book and activities! 4y
DrSpalding Remember that science fiction is often rooted in scientific principle. This would be modern fantasy! His books, many of them considered wordless or incorporating few words can be used to have students create their own stories as you noted. These mentor texts are very helpful in the classroom. 4y

Mr Wuffles! is an SF picture book written and illustrated by David Wiesner. It is a Caldecott honors book with very few words. Mr Wuffles! is about a cat who is very picky about his toys and ignores most of the ones his owner gets for him. One day, he finds the perfect toy that turns out to not be a cat toy at all. I would like to do an AS on David Wiesner and compare his literature. He would be a great study on SF books and wordless books as well

deiacovab I would use RA for this book and UDL 3.3 Guide information processing and visualization as students could brainstorm what is taking place on a certain page and about the 'alien language' we see in the text. This story gives students the opportunity to imagine what is taking place since the author is not outright stating what is happening. ESOL strategy 2 promote cooperation would be perfect when discussing this story during RA. 4y
deiacovab https://www.hmhbooks.com/wiesner/ is the author's website which has videos of the author talking about his creative process and his biography. There are book lists and also some interactive tools on his page as well. #ucflae3414sp20 (edited) 4y
ShardaeP It sounds like this would be a good book for students to make inferences and predictions. Students can focus on practicing reading strategies with this text. 4y
DrSpalding Awesome image! Most of his books are wordless. Going straight to the publisher and author website is a wise move. Your videos could help with an author study. (edited) 4y

Mr Wuffles is a SF, Caldecott honor book written and illustrated by David Wiesner. This book tells the tale of a cat, Mr Wuffles, and his interaction with aliens who come into his house. This book is very good at helping kids infer and imagine what characters are going to do or say because there are very few words in this book.

Mwinship This website includes numerous activities you can do with this book: https://www.hmhbooks.com/wiesner/wiesner_dg.pdf #UCFLAE3414F19
I think a great idea for this book would be for students to IR and then create their own speech bubbles, or dialogue, for the mostly wordless book.
The EL strategy 16 about integrating writing and reading activities and UDL guideline 7.1 about optimizing individual choice align with this book and lesson plan.
4y
DrSpalding I appreciate your wordless picture books that you have posted. Not many of you do this and I believe they have great value in the classroom. English learner strategy 16, integrating writing is perfect. 4y

The tagged book is wordless and chronicles the adventures of a cat who is attempting to catch a group of miniature aliens in his house. This book is for the self reader. Author David Weisner received a Caldecott Medal for his 2013 book. This story allows tryout mind to make up what the characters may be saying. The stealthy cat is picky as to why he only likes certain toys, and his owners may never understand. This graphic novel type story has amazing illustrations that follow.

This book is adorable! Mostly without words, the illustrations play out like a comic with panels and dialogue bubbles (usually with an imagined language). I love the cross-species collaboration and the nod to Lascaux style cave paintings. Now I'm looking for everything else this author has done 😍 #babyreads #mommyreads #picturebooks

Caldecott and was written in 2013. This book is definitely a different book. The book begins with mr. Wuffles playing with one toy then going to a toy that looks like a UFO. The aliens inside were panicking because the cat started to play with the UFO. The aliens started to run for ut but the cat continued to go after them. The aliens then met the ants who talked to them about the cat. At the end the aliens are thrown out the window to escape.
