#OnThisDay in 1846 artist Randolph Caldecott was born. Working in London as a magazine illustrator, Caldecott was commissioned to illustrate two Christmas books (The House that Jack Built and The Diverting History of John Gilpin). They were so successful that the publisher commissioned two books a year from Caldecott until the time of his death in 1886. In 1938 the first Caldecott medal was awarded for picture book illustration. #HistoryGetsLIT
