4 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
This middle-grade graphic novel for fans of Roller Girl and Smile introduces Jamila and Shirley, two unlikely friends who save each other's summers while solving their neighborhood's biggest mysteries. Jamila Waheed is staring down a lonely summer in a new neighborhood--until she meets Shirley Bones. Sure, Shirley's a little strange, but both girls need a new plan for the summer, and they might as well become friends. Then this kid Oliver shows up begging for Shirley's help. His pet gecko has disappeared, and he's sure it was stolen! That's when Jamila discovers Shirley's secret: She's the neighborhood's best kid detective, and she's on the case. When Jamila discovers she's got some detective skills of her own, a crime-solving partnership is born. The mystery of the missing gecko turns Shirley and Jamila's summer upside down. And when their partnership hits a rough patch, they have to work together to solve the greatest mystery of all: What it means to be a friend.

Shirley and Jamila are two girls with the same problem. They are destined for summer camps they don‘t want to go to. Jamila is the youngest of three children: a 20 year old brother, a 16 year old brother, and her. She loves to play basketball, but she can only play it on hoop in her driveway. Shirley is unusual. Sam called her weird and Shirley does not like that. What Shirley is, is observant. She notices things that others don‘t.

LibrarianRyan This is a gender bent Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Jamila is fun-loving and she wants to get to know people, and have friends. Shirley loves to read, finding things out, and solving mysteries. Shirley, being super smart hatches a plan to keep them out of summer camp. Instead she has found a way for Jamila to spend the summer on the basketball court and Shirley helping the neighbors solve mysteries and find lost things. This book was an absolute 2y
LibrarianRyan joy to read. The illustrations are appropriate, they‘re funny, and I think people will see themselves. I think kids will find this a lot of fun and while Shirley may not be a bumbling detective she‘s bumbling through life trying to make friends and not be seen as the weird child 2y

A fun contemporary #graphicnovel about two 10-year-old girls who, upon first meeting, form a pact to their mutual benefit in order to avoid spending their summer at camps they‘re not interested in. Instead, they become friends & solve mysteries. Colourful art with expressive faces & a diverse cast that reflects their home city of Toronto. #Canadian #comics #kidlit

Why does she hate you?

LeahBergen I hate them too now. 😆 3y
Lindy @LeahBergen I like how the author isn‘t shy about showing how good kids can also be unaware of how annoying their actions can be. 3y

It isn‘t really the season for saving your summer, but I loved hanging out with 10-year-old Shirley and Jamila as they schemed, solved mysteries, and got to know each other. Great realistic middle grade graphic novel for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Svetlana Chmakova.
