Hush! A Thai Lullaby by Minfong Ho is a beautiful P book. It shares a receptive rhyme of a mother telling animals to hush because her child is sleeping nearby. It won a Caldecott in 1997. This would be a great storytelling picture book because of the variety of animals presented and the fun rhythm. #ucflae3414f19

cassandram This awesome source http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/theme-poems-using... as a guide to apply to this book on how to incorporate the 5 senses within poetry. The UDL I would use is 4.1 by varying the method of navigation, storytelling and 5 senses. The ESOL strategy I would use is 18 by incorporating Total Physical response. #ucflae3414f19 4y
YvetteE Students will enjoy learning with poetry. This is a great lesson plan! 4y

I‘m not sure if I‘ll be reading this in my classroom. Although it wasn‘t a bad as I thought, I haven‘t decided if the children will enjoy it or not.

“Hush!: A Thai Lullaby” was written by Minfong Ho in 1996. Overall, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It describes the noises nature makes in the night and how the mother was trying to keep her baby to sleep. I don‘t know if I would read this book multiple times, but I enjoyed it when it when I first read it.

“Only baby's wide awake.“ This quote is short and humorous in ways because the mom spends all this time trying to keep the baby asleep only for him to be awake in the end.

This book would be good for a cultural background. I might use this book for learning about diversity.

Caldecott Honor Book. This book was very repetitive in what it was saying. Changing the animal each page. Illustrations are beautiful and show the background of the country and life style of the family.

This book is a Caldecott Winner and rightfully so(pub.1996). A nice rhyme to it throughout along with great illustrations. The story was a nice lullaby that was also a different setting then some kids may be used to.
I really loved the illustrations; simple yet colorful enough to engage the reader throughout.
“Hush! Is everyone asleep?“ I liked this quote because the mother had finally gotten all of the animals to sleep and she could too.

Tippy-Toe Chick, Go! Written by George Shannon and illustrated by Laura Dronzek is a picture book won the silver Charlotte Zolotow Award.  This book is about a family of chicks that wanted to eat but to do it they had to pass a big scary dog. The Momma hen, big chick, and medium chick all tried but were to scared. Little chick was so hungry that it tried and tricked the dog, so they were all able to pass it to eat. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP A perfect ESOL strategy I would use to go with this book would be to “encourage self-talk (positive thinking” and say that they can do anything they set their mind to, just like baby chick did. An E.D strategy I would use to go with this book would be to “foster collaboration and community” by talking about the book and how we can be like baby chick. We would also foster collaboration by doing a graphic organizer about drawing conclusions. 5y
DrSpalding Graphic organizers work and could foster collaboration. What a cute image! 5y

Hush!: A Thai Lullaby was written by Mingfong Ho and illustrated by Holly Meade is a children‘s poetry picture book that won the silver Caldecott Honor. Is a rhyming book about a mother who goes around telling animals near the house to hush because her baby is sleeping nearby. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An E.D strategy I would use with this book would be to “foster collaboration and community”. I would do this by having student engage in the book and say what the Mom says next because it is repetitive. An ESOL strategy I would use would be to “incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in the curriculum” by translating some or all of the words of the book into their language then work on English by doing a word search. 5y

Caldecott honor book, 1996. Words and sentences have a fun rhythm. Tells the story of a mother and her sleeping baby and the mother goes throughout the land to quiet many animals. Once she quiets all the animals she falls asleep too, but the baby is wide awake. Shows a mother‘s love for her child.

The book I read was Hush! By Ho Meade and was published in 1996. This book took place in Thailand. The characters were a mother and her baby. The mother was trying her best to quiet down all the animals and sounds that were causing her baby to stay awake which was the plot. The theme was no matter what you do and how much effort you put into making a baby sleep they just might not do it.

The Thailand setting was beautiful. I love how the animals were also native to Thailand.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. As an education major, this book would be an amazing book to read to a young class because of how rhythmic this book is. I loved how well the words rolled off the tongue and the repetitive nature will help kids follow along and help them read along as well. I also loved how it was culturally aware. The pictures showed Thailand in a beautiful way and the animals were native to Thailand as well.

4.3/5
