Synthesizing Gravity
Synthesizing Gravity: Selected Prose | Kay Ryan
1 post | 1 to read
The first-ever collection of essays by one of our most distinguished and distinctive poets, Pulitzer Prize-winner and former Poet Laureate of the United States, Kay Ryan Synthesizing Gravity gathers for the first time a thirty-year selection of Kay Ryans probings into aesthetics, poetics, and the mind in pursuit of art. A bracing collection of critical prose, book reviews, and her private previously unpublished soundings of poems and poets including Robert Frost, Stevie Smith, Marianne Moore, William Bronk, and Emily Dickinson Synthesizing Gravity bristles with Ryans crisp wit, her keen off-kilter insights, and her appetite and appreciation for the genuine. Among essays like Radiantly Indefensible, Notes on the Danger of Notebooks, and The Abrasion of Loneliness, are piquant pieces on the virtues of emptiness, forgetfulness and other under-loved concepts. Edited and with an introduction by Christian Wiman, this generous collection of Ryans distinctive thinking gives us a surprising look into the mind of an American master.

Still enjoying time off from work. I could easily get use to this…sitting in late afternoon sunlight, possibly dozing, but somehow progressing through this book which I bought to give to a friend, though it seems intended for me. She might be destined for a new pair of socks! lol😆

Ruthiella I could totally get used to a life of leisure! I would NOT be bored. Hope your friend likes the socks! 😆 2y
AshleyHoss820 I‘m really glad I‘m not the only one this happens to! Last year, I almost kept a book I bought for my sister-in-law! 😂 2y
PurpleyPumpkin I‘m also off work for the holidays and I‘m quite enjoying it! I could definitely get used to this. Glad to hear that you‘re enjoying your much deserved holiday. 😉 2y

Christine LOL! I love everything about this post. 2y
Suet624 I took the week off too and have mostly just read. It‘s delightful. Best wishes to you. 2y
Nute @Ruthiella Girl, isn‘t that the truth! Never a bored day in the life of leisure!😁 2y
Nute @AshleyHoss820 So funny, Ashley! Maybe the best thing or the only thing that we can do is to have it delivered by mail directly to the intended recipient from the store. Don‘t let the book have a single moment alone with us at home.🤦🏽‍♀️😝 2y
Nute @PurpleyPumpkin This end of the year leave from work is something that I do every year. I extend the given holiday leave usually by ten days. The year I took only one week off so it‘s a short time, but it still feels very good. I hope that your time off is one of peace and relaxation. Take Care, Kimberly!💜 2y
Nute @Christine Oh, yeah! Thank you, Christine!💕 2y
Nute @Suet624 Isn‘t it wonderful, Sue? I think that “time-off” or “annual-leave” might be the best two words strung together EVER! I hope that you enjoy every second of your break. If reading is occurring then I already know that it is the BEST time!🤗 2y
UwannaPublishme Glad you‘re taking time for you and enjoying your holiday! ❤️ 2y
Nute @UwannaPublishme Thank you. It wasn‘t a planned vacation or a backyard adventurous moment. It was just a time of pure relaxation and try to do nothing. The do nothing part didn‘t work out so well. I gave it my best shot, but the ‘others‘ saw it as a different type of opportunity…more cooking, more going, more cleaning, more talking…more stuff like that.🤪👇🏽 2y
Nute @UwannaPublishme 👆🏽 So now I‘m more tired than ever, but at least those activities were done in either sweatpants and sweatshirt or jeans and T-shirts.😀 Merry Christmas, Donna! And now Happy New Year!💜🥳💜 2y
UwannaPublishme Ha! Isn‘t that how it works? I guess it really is hard to just do nothing, especially if other people are around! 😂 Wishing you a very Happy New Year filled with more lounging, more days off and more reading time. 🤗❤️🥂 2y
