These are the 4 books I bought last Saturday in Berlin, and I just finished the first book, #AsylumRoad. I didn‘t know anything about it, except for seeing it a couple of times on Instagram (ads really work for me when it‘s about books!). @

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️,5/5

Normal people argue, I said once, and then we had a very quiet argument in the garden centre, beside an LED Buddha fountain and a sign that read TRANQUIL OASIS. I felt such relief despite the humidity, the claus trophobia, the smell of rabbit hutch. His moods would shift abruptly, and at times I would find myself having crossed an obscure boundary into a strange place, a territory which only minutes ago had not been there.

...Solving a murder was a better way for us to feel connected.

Reggie There‘s this old Dean Koontz book where this guy and girl fall in love while killing off these invaders who look like humans but they can see through them. At the end of the book after they‘ve killed off a huge hive they realize their love is not as strong unless they‘re killing those aliens, so they go on in search of more of those aliens. That‘s what this reminded me of. 3y
charl08 @Reggie yes, it's an odd way of phrasing listening to a truecrime podcast together! 3y

A young woman life‘s with the trauma of the Balkan war. She finds security in her relationship with Luke but the ‘normality‘ is a pretence & her suppressed fear, grief & anger spill over, at odds with Luke‘s comfortable upbringing. Gives insight into the ripple effects of war on families & what it‘s like to live with trauma. Great sense of place & we feel for Anya as she‘s caught between 2 worlds, struggles to belong & loses her grip. Feels true.

BarbaraBB This one sounds good. 3y
charl08 I am just reading it now. Thinking about other novels in translation I've read by authors with links to the Balkan conflict, and accounts of trauma. 3y

Olivia Sudjic is so good at finding tension in mundane things, bunking the sense of dislocation and unease until it's almost unbearable. This story is more straightforward than Sympathy but it's brilliantly constructed around the MC's growing insecurity and dissociation #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

This section is giving me flashbacks to when I lost my purse in Ljubljana airport. And then I lost my phone. Now I hate flying

Really looking forward to this second novel by Olivia Sudjic, I loved Sympathy. I saw her at edbookfest in 2017 and she was intelligent, articulate, fascinating. Shame she had to share a stage with Lawrence Osborne, who spent the whole session slagging off other authors and boosting about having a maid. I said I'd never read anything by him and I never have!

My online shopping addiction continues. Wine might have been involved...
Still, no book bought is a waste!
