Black Summer: Stories of Loss, Courage and Community from the 2019-2020 Bushfires
Black Summer: Stories of Loss, Courage and Community from the 2019-2020 Bushfires | Michael Rowland
3 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Told by ABC reporters who were on the ground and broadcasting during our worst-ever fire season, spearheaded by Michael Rowland The bushfires that burnt across Australia from June 2019 to February 2020 were unprecedented. By the time the rains came, they had devoured more than 18 million hectares of bush and farm land, destroyed nearly 3000 homes, claimed the lives of 33 people, killed about a billion animals and driven more to the brink of extinction. The heartbreak, pain, loss and uncertainty were felt far and wide. These were fires that affected nearly everyone along the east coast of the country directly or indirectly, and touched the hearts of people everywhere. But out of the tragedies, the fear, the lost homes, the burnt forests, the bleak holidays, the unrelenting smoke have come stories of courage and community. ABC reporters on the ground during the crises brought many of these into homes across the nation. This book contains updates, new stories and overviews by them, as well as reflections on how such a catastrophe occurred and what we have learnt from it. It is both a record of the events and a tribute to those who endured, escaped, fought and in some cases paid the ultimate price. With forewords by Ita Buttrose and Andrew Constance, and contributions from Casey Briggs, Jen Browning, Jessie Davies, Daniel Doody, Matthew Doran, Richard Glover, Nick Hose, Melinda James, Tom Joyner, Jonathon Kendall, Stacey Lee, Hamish Macdonald, Jade Macmillan, Greg Nelson, Adriane Reardon, Michael Rowland, Baz Ruddick, Erin Semmler, Peter Sommerville, Josh Szeps, Claire Wheaton and Phil Williams. All profits from this book will go to the bushfire recovery effort. By purchasing this book you are assisting people, animals, forests and communities affected by the fires.

#ScarathlonDailyPrompts #Day1 #Black This is most definitely classed as a horror/crime book. A NF about the catastrophic bushfires of the 2019/2020 summer season in Australia, it‘s a heartbreaking journey through the stories of the small towns & bush destroyed by flames & the millions of animals dead and people who lost everything to ash. It was the headline across the world till Covid arrived. I‘m not sure which I‘d prefer. #TeamSlaughter 6pts

Bk3 of March is done! Took me a few days to read this coz I had to stop from crying. A NF of stories from the horrendous bushfires in Aus during the summer of 2019-20, you can feel the emotion coming off the page. I can still vividly remember the colour of the sky & the all pervasive smoke in the air. I still wake from dreams of camping in Blue Gum Forest in the Grose Valley & burst into tears knowing it‘s all gone, the trees that were over 100yrs

Moonprismpower Do you know if in some of the areas the soil recovered for replanting? This sounds like a sad book. I‘d cry too. 3y
Lizpixie @Moonprismpower the Aussie bush has great powers of resurrection, in fact most of our native flora needs fire to regenerate. I know that these fires burned a lot hotter than previous ones & there was concern the soil wouldn‘t bounce back, but there‘s green & new life on most of the fire grounds now. The loss of Blue Gum Forest is personal for me,being amongst those trees was the most peaceful I‘ve ever felt. You can‘t replace that with new growth. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Great review! What a tragedy. 😕 It's good to know that things are slowly regenerating, even if it will be decades before the area truly recovers. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very good! 3y

Went to Target to look at baby stuff for the daughter, came out with books instead. Are you surprised?😋 Two Australian books with a similar theme, one NF about last summers horrendous bushfire season where we lost 18million hectares of bush & farmland, 33 people & approx 1billion animals, the other a thriller set during a bushfire in a country town. I can still see & smell the smoke & ash that coated most of my country for weeks.💔
