Animal Instinct: A K Team Novel | David Rosenfelt
4 posts | 4 read
The K Team is back in the second installment in this spinoff series from bestselling author David Rosenfelt's beloved Andy Carpenter mysteries. Corey Douglas and his K-9 partner, a German shepherd named Simon Garfunkel, are recently retired police officers turned private investigators. Along with fellow former cop Laurie Collins and her investigating partner, Marcus, they call themselves the K Team, in honor of Simon. The K Teams latest case a recent unsolved murder gives Corey a chance to solve "the one that got away". Corey knew the murder victim from his time on the force, when he was unable to protect her in a domestic dispute. Now, he is convinced the same abusive boyfriend is responsible for her murder. With some help from Lauries lawyer husband, Andy Carpenter, the K Team is determined to prove what the police could not, no matter the cost. What they uncover is much more sinister than they could have imagined. Known for his dog-loving stories and addictive characters, bestselling mystery author David Rosenfelt presents Animal Instinct, the second installment in this engrossing new series about a dynamite investigative team and their canine partner.

This book was somewhere between a cozy mystery and a crime thriller. It had elements of both but fell short of both. The MC is retired cop turned PI. He has been setup in a murder. He and his team, including his retired K9 partner Simon, work to find the killer. The plot was interesting but it lacked the twists and tension of a crime thriller. You can't call it a cozy mystery because he is a professional. The best part was Simon.

TheSpineView I probably would have liked it more if Simon had played a bigger part in the story. 3ish ⭐️ for this one. #Scarathlon2022 @StayCurious #TeamMonsterMash 2y

I‘m up-to-date on this mystery spinoff series, though I read the installments out of order. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#animal-instinct-the-k-team-2

Did I just spend most of today listening to this book? Yes and I have to say that I've got mixed feelings. My coworker lmk that Rosenfelt made a spinoff series to Andy Carpenter and I was like wuuutttt and I binged it. Not as funny and I'm coming to understand that the big sell is Andy and Grover Gardner bc Covey (the MC in this series) and Fred Berman (narrator) nearly put me to sleep a few times. Not bad but not great #mystery

Obviously no bribery was involved in the staging of this picture... 🤣

The second book in Rosenfelt‘s spin-off series, The K Team, makes for a fast and fun read! Andy Carpenter plays a pretty significant role here, too- and Corey‘s narration isn‘t quite that different from the Andy books for this to feel markedly separate. Still, the plot holds twists and there‘s a lot of love for dogs here! I‘m looking forward to whatever Rosenfelt writes next!
