Andean Express
Andean Express | Juan de Recacoechea
2 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
This moody murder mystery set during an overnight train journey in 1950s South America “delights like strong coffee savored in a cosmopolitan cafe” (Publishers Weekly). In 1952, a train makes its way from La Paz, Bolivia, to the Chilean seaport of Arica. Among the passengers are: a businessman with his much-younger wife, a man in priest’s garb hiding a secret, Irish and Russian expatriates, a miner, and a student. Before the trip is over, there will be many revelations—including the identity of a killer. From the author of American Visa, a winner of Bolivia’s National Book Prize, this atmospheric novel is “part social commentary, part mystery thriller . . . A chilling, tragic tale” (MultiCultural Review).

Mehso-so

1952. A 24-hour train journey from La Paz, Bolivia to Arica, Chile. An eccentric cast of characters. And a murder.

I enjoyed the feel of the journey- the sense of place was wonderful. The conversations felt stylized rather than flowing. We learn a fair amount about the conflict between mine-owners and unions. Possibly more about ‘young love‘/obsession/sex than murder mystery, although we don‘t find out who paid the killer until the last page.

rockpools And the constant references to half-breeds was disconcerting.

Overall, a weird one. I don‘t think I‘ll be falling over myself to read more by the author- but the descriptions were wonderful. #readaroundtheworld #bolivia @BookwormM @Currey @Simona @TorieStorieS @sprainedbrain
