The Shoelace Book
The Shoelace Book: A Mathematical Guide to the Best (and Worst) Ways to Lace Your Shoes | Burkard Polster
3 posts | 1 read
This book offers a fascinating and entertaining look at the mathematics behind the many patterns by which shoes are laced. Burkhard Polster, who lists mathematical juggling, magic and origami among his talents, uses formulas and detailed illustrations to answer questions such as the shortest and strongest lacings in several categories. An accessible mix of combinatorics and elementary calculus yields the author's conclusions.

This is an introduction to a set of mathematical problems inspired by shoe lacings: how can lacings be classified? What is the shortest lacing? The longest? The strongest? The weakest? It's a fun set of problems for people who find this sort of thing fun (me!) The author has a YouTube channel for popular math, where you can see him talk about this material: https://youtu.be/CSw3Wqoim5M

This book is that video, with fewer jokes and more math.

Dilara Thank you for the link. That video was fantastic! I'm not sure I'm ready for the book, but I certainly enjoyed the 30-minute video explanation. 2y
