Pickpick

I‘m giving this a pick but only a soft pick…. I can see why you said you‘d forgotten it already Rachel! @rockpools

Portas is a retail and business expert and this book is her view on what people now want to see from companies post-COVID.

I mainly couldn‘t get past the fact that she championed Brewdog a couple of times as a shining example, when we now know how rubbish they really are! 🤷‍♀️

rockpools 😂😂 Sorry bout that. I really enjoyed it at the time… but now 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
squirrelbrain Hey, it‘s fine @rockpools - at least it was a #borrownotbuy! 2y

I really appreciated this one. It‘s probably my first mid-pandemic-written read, and looks at the changes businesses are making and need to make - away from bottom-line profit, & towards values, people, environment & caring. I confess to never being a massive MP fan, so I was quite surprised at just how much this resonated. It‘s filled with references to other books, podcasts, TED talks (in a good ‘let‘s break the TBR‘ way, rather than an ‘aren‘t

rockpools I clever?‘way), and is full of real-life examples of businesses that are doing things different. She even talks to CEOs about their favourite poetry, I rattled through it in about 3 days (pretty much unheard of at the mo, never mind for a business book) and have come out of it feeling quite positive and inspired. Kind of niche, but maybe worth a read… 3y
squirrelbrain Sounds right up my street…stacked. She‘s actually doing a talk in Leeds very soon but it‘s an in-person event so I‘m not keen…🤔 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain Cool 😎! I wasn‘t sure anyone would want to know about this one. If you have other recommendations from up this particular street, do let me know. And no, I‘m not up for in-person events yet - I spent yesterday sharing an office with a colleague. Haven‘t done that in about 6 years, and that was more than enough! 3y

squirrelbrain I‘ll let you know if I can think of any similar, interesting, ‘business‘ books Rachel! I saw this guy speak at an online conference last week so I‘m going to order his book - I‘ll let you know if it‘s any good… 3y
squirrelbrain This just appeared on my Libby, Rachel. I‘ve put a hold on it and it‘s only 2 weeks; really looking forward to it! 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain oh cool! I hope you enjoy it. I found it really interesting - but have to admit to having forgotten a lot about it since 😕 2y

Today‘s train reading. I decided I should probably get up to speed with a little work reading, but goodness a lot of it‘s tiresome! This, on the other hand, I‘m loving.

It‘s a thoroughly up-to-date look at how business is changing, and how it needs to change in a post-pandemic, climate-crisis world - she calls for a focus on people, planet, profit (in that order, recognising “you can‘t build the cathedrals of tomorrow if you can‘t pay the

rockpools stonemasons of today”).

It‘s very firmly not a call to step away from capitalism (this *is* Mary Portas), but a call to change it by using our buying/selling power more consciously. As someone who has been kicking around the business information world for a year or several, this is kind of making sense of what I do and confirming some changes I‘ve wondered about. In short, I‘m liking it!
