Penguin Classics Three Men in a Boat (UK)
Penguin Classics Three Men in a Boat (UK) | Jerome K Jerome
A comic masterpiece that has never been out of print since it was first published in 1889, Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat includes an introduction and notes by Jeremy Lewis in Penguin Classics. Martyrs to hypochondria and general seediness, J. and his friends George and Harris decide that a jaunt up the Thames would suit them to a 'T'. But when they set off, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather forecasts and tins of pineapple chunks - not to mention the devastation left in the wake of J.'s small fox-terrier Montmorency. Three Men in a Boat was an instant success when it appeared in 1889, and, with its benign escapism, authorial discursions and wonderful evocation of the late-Victorian 'clerking classes', it hilariously captured the spirit of its age. In his introduction, Jeremy Lewis examines Jerome K. Jerome's life and times, and the changing world of Victorian England he depicts - from the rise of a new mass-culture of tabloids and bestselling novels to crazes for daytripping and bicycling. Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) was born in Walstall, Staffordshire, and educated at Marylebone Grammar School. He left school at fourteen to become a railway clerk, the first in a long line of jobs that included actor, teacher and journalist. His first book, On Stage and Off, a collection of humorous pieces about the theatre, was published in 1885, and was followed the year after with the more commercially-successful The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow; but it was with Three Men in a Boat (1889) that Jerome achieved lasting fame. He later went on to become one of the founders of the humorous magazine, The Idler, and continued to write articles and plays. If you enjoyed Three Men in a Boat, you might like Stella Gibbons's Cold Comfort Farm, also available in Penguin Classics.

This is an absolute joy if you like: journey novels, gentle humour, English history, PG Wodehouse, & can withstand discussions about whether it‘s smart to bring cheese & tallow on a close boat trip & if you have ever wondered whether the maze at Hampton Court is worth the effort. There‘s no plot, but many extended anecdotes. This book wanders like a drunken tourist. It‘s a book about nothing. A Seinfeldian journey up the Thames and through time.

Serious P.G. Wodehouse vibes & left me laughing. There were also surprisingly poignant lines. Read before To Say Nothing of the Dog, which references it.

“Let your boat of life be light, packed w/only what you need-a homely home & simple pleasures 1 or 2 friends, worth the name, someone to love & someone to love you, a cat, dog, & a pipe or 2, enough to eat & enough to wear, & a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.”

mabell This book surprised me with how funny and relatable it was! It‘s on my to be reread list! 2mo

#TLT #ThreeListThursday @dabbe

Movie: Galaxy Quest “Do I have a last name? DO I?!?!”

TV: Arrested Development “There‘s always money in the banana stand” *wink*

Book: Three Men in a Boat “George goes to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays when they wake him up and put him outside at two.”

dabbe You've given me three items to look into! I've not seen or read any of these! Shame on me! 🤣
Thanks for playing! 🧡💜💛
7mo
CSeydel @dabbe Wow! Galaxy Quest is a hilarious send up of Star Trek starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman and an absolutely tremendous supporting cast. Sure Tim Allen is the comedian in the cast but Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman are absolutely genius when it comes to comedic timing.
Arrested Development is very quirky humor; it‘s not for everyone, but if it‘s on your wavelength, it is riotously funny.
7mo
dabbe @CSeydel You write “Alan Rickman“, I'm there! Added to my TBV list (To Be Viewed!). And, while looking the others up, I have heard of ARRESTED and BOAT. I just haven't seen or read them. On my lists now, too! 🤗 7mo

Classic 19th century yarn of three men and a dog going on a boating holiday rowing up the Thames from London to Oxford.

It had some very funny scenes and some descriptive passages which may have been meant as parodies. Some of the historical digressions and the story of the woman who committed suicide were a bit odd to find in a humorous book, but perhaps they also made more sense when it was first written as parodies.

Well my week went slightly off course. Instead of In a Dark Dark Wood for #aam I read The Farewell Tour because it came in at the library and I wanted to read it before it‘s due back! Dark Wood isn‘t in demand, so it will keep another week.

I read Still Waters & Three Men in a Boat for #trappedonanisland

This week I‘m dropping everything to read my ARC of The Road to Roswell, an upcoming release by one of my favorite authors!

“How many people, on that voyage up the river of life, load up the boat till it is ever in danger of swamping with a store of foolish things which they think essential to the pleasure and comfort of the trip, but which are really only useless lumber.”

Loving the blend of slapstick hilarity with pearls of deep philosophical insight in this book!

256 pages. Witty, humorous story about three British gentlemen who went on 2 weeks' vacation on a boat. Three hypochondriac men decided it would be very exciting to travel on Thames. But, as very well expressed in the book, when you imagine that you are at the sunny beach, it always feels better than the actual beach😊

What a gem @SerialReader !

This tale of 3 friends and a dog boating on the Thames is hilarious. Witty, even laugh-out-loud at times, the series of vignettes is like an 1880s Seinfeld. There are flights of poetry, and bits that are solemn, but overall it is very funny travelogue. It is amazing how timeless it reads. Just by updating some of the language and references, this could be a contemporary work!

SerialReader Totally agreed! I started this a few days ago. Absolutely lovely so far. 6y

My current read put me in hysterics starting with chapter one. Written in the late 1800's, it's a travelouge of 3 Victorian men (and a dog) taking a holiday traveling up the Thames to escape their ills. Fun, British humor. It's a bit dated but I think it holds up well more than 100 years later. This is a great break for me as a wend my way through some non-fiction reads + my next read will be Connie Willis's book: To Say Nothing of the Dog. 😊
