The Ottomans
The Ottomans: Khans, Caesars, and Caliphs | Marc David Baer
5 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
This major new history of the Ottoman dynasty reveals a diverse empire that straddled East and West. The Ottoman Empire has long been depicted as the Islamic, Asian antithesis of the Christian, European West. But the reality was starkly different: the Ottomans multiethnic, multilingual, and multireligious domain reached deep into Europes heart. Indeed, the Ottoman rulers saw themselves as the new Romans. Recounting the Ottomans remarkable rise from a frontier principality to a world empire, historian Marc David Baer traces their debts to their Turkish, Mongolian, Islamic, and Byzantine heritage. The Ottomans pioneered religious toleration even as they used religious conversion to integrate conquered peoples. But in the nineteenth century, they embraced exclusivity, leading to ethnic cleansing, genocide, and the empires demise after the First World War. The Ottomans vividly reveals the dynastys full history and its enduring impact on Europe and the world.

Fascinating, informative, & accessible history of the Ottoman Empire from its rise at the end of the 13th century to its collapse in 1922. Baer argues the Ottomans saw themselves as successors to Rome & that Ottoman history is very much a part of European history. A detailed exploration of the dynastic history of the empire as well as important aspects of Ottoman society, including ethnic groups, religion, language & more. Good general overview.

A must-read for students of history! I listened to the audio version which is just fine if you are okay with not remembering everyone‘s name. I‘m okay with taking away the big picture and pivotal historic points. Overall, it‘s a great companion to understanding modern cultural conflicts (ahem, Crimea). On a personal note, I love the Ottomans for establishing coffee drinking for the rest of the world! ☕️
