The Artist Colony
The Artist Colony: A Novel | Joanna FitzPatrick
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
July 1924. Sarah Cunningham, a young Modernist painter, arrives in Carmel-by-the-Sea from Paris to bury her older sister, Ada Belle. En route, she is shocked to learn that Ada Belles suspicious death is a suicide. But why kill herself? Her plein air paintings were famous and her upcoming exhibition of portraitures would bring her even wider recognition. Sarah puts her own artistic career on hold and, trailed by Ada Belles devoted dog, Albert, becomes a secret sleuth, a task made harder by the misogyny and racism she discovers in this seemingly idyllic locale. Part mystery, part historical fiction, this engrossing novel celebrates the artistic talents of early women painters, the deep bonds of sisterhood, the muse that is beautiful scenery, and the determination of one young woman to discover the truth, to protect an artistic legacy, and to give her sister the farewell she deserves.

Read for book tour review this week. Sarah, a young artist in the 1920s studying Modernism in Paris goes to Caramel-by-the-Sea to discover the truth about her famous artist older sister‘s death, ruled as a suicide. Tagged as a historical mystery & historical literary fiction, for me it works more as the later as the mystery seemed too obvious. But I loved the descriptions of the artist colony in Carmel & the struggles of women to find a place in⬇️

DebinHawaii … despite the misogyny, sexism & racism that permeated the times. I learned a lot about art & the arts especially in that decade & it made me Google for more info. I also enjoyed the characters & the setting & that it was inspired by the author discovering her real life artist aunt‘s Caramel cottage, The Sketch Box. 🏡 My full review is here: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-book-tour-stops-here-review-of.ht... Crashed when I got home from a long week at work & woke at up 2 AM so I figured it was a good time to set my #JoyousJanuary #readathon goals. I‘m going to read my sections for #SundayBuddyRead & #Pemberlittens & finish up The House in the Cerulean Sea for #NewYearWhoDis & my #ARC of Lost CoastLiterary. I‘m hoping to get a chunk of the tagged book read for a book tour review & finish & decide on a recipe from Midnight Chicken for virtual foodie ⬇️

DebinHawaii … book club. Finally, I‘d like to start Dark Night as I love this Alaska set series. And then who knows as I remain always a moody reader. 🤷🏻‍♀️📚 (edited) 2y
