Teaching with Fire
Teaching with Fire: Poetry That Sustains the Courage to Teach | Sam M. Intrator, Megan Scribner
2 posts | 3 to read
Those of us who care about the young and their education must find ways to remember what teaching and learning are really about. We must find ways to keep our hearts alive as we serve our students. Poetry has the power to keep us vital and focused on what really matters in life and in schooling. Teaching with Fire is a wonderful collection of eighty-eight poems from well-loved poets such as Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Billy Collins, Emily Dickinson, and Pablo Neruda. Each of these evocative poems is accompanied by a brief story from a teacher explaining the significance of the poem in his or her lifes work. This beautiful book also includes an essay that describes how poetry can be used to grow both personally and professionally. Teaching with Fire was written in partnership with the Center for Teacher Formation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

I finished my 12th year of teaching, and next school year I will finally get my chance to be a school librarian. It‘s been a long road. I will miss my school for the past 9 years, and it will be weird not to be a classroom teacher anymore, but I‘m excited to teach in the library next year. Top pics are my classroom set up at the beginning of last school year and bottom are it cleared out for summer. #teachersoflitsy

Happy First Day of School to any teachers returning this week! It's hard to believe summer is over, but I'm loving my new students! 📚📚📚

marita August seems so early to start! Where are you? We start after labour day here. 8y
Bookworm83 @marita I'm in Colorado. We do go back early, but we are out before Memorial Day. 8y
Daisey I'm going to have to see if I can find a copy of this! I worked in my classroom today, and the students start back next Wednesday. Glad to hear yours started well! 8y
Bookworm83 @Daisey It was a gift from the teacher for whom I student taught ( 10 years ago 😊). It's a great little book! 8y
