Survivor's Guilt
Survivor's Guilt | Robyn Gigl
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Robyn Gigl’s unique protagonist, transgender attorney Erin McCabe, returns in a fascinating and timely legal thriller that delves into the dark world of human trafficking by the rich and powerful . . . At first, the death of millionaire businessman Charles Parsons seems like a straightforward suicide. There’s no sign of forced entry or struggle in his lavish New Jersey mansion—just a single gunshot wound from his own weapon. But days later, a different story emerges. Computer techs pick up a voice recording that incriminates Parsons’ adoptive daughter, Ann, who duly confesses and pleads guilty. Erin McCabe has little interest in reviewing such a slam-dunk case—even after she has a mysterious meeting with one of the investigating detectives, who reveals that Ann, like Erin, is a trans woman. Yet despite their misgivings, Erin and her law partner, Duane Swisher, ultimately can’t ignore the pieces that don’t fit. As their investigation deepens, Erin and Swish convince Ann to withdraw her guilty plea. But Ann clearly knows more than she’s willing to share, even if it means a life sentence. Who is she protecting, and why? Fighting against time and a prosecutor hell-bent on notching another conviction, the two work tirelessly—Erin inside the courtroom, Swish in the field—to clear Ann’s name. But despite Parsons’ former associates’ determination to keep his—and their own—illegal activities buried, a horrifying truth emerges—a web of human exploitation, unchecked greed, and murder. Soon, a quest to see justice served becomes a desperate struggle to survive . . .

This is the second in the Erin McCabe mystery series and having now read all three, I can highly recommend them. Written by a transgender woman lawyer and featuring a transgender woman lawyer, the author brings her knowledge to both the character and the plot. This evil in this one reminded me of the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein. I enjoyed both the characters and the writing and am now looking forward to more in this series. 4/5 stars

A fantastic legal thriller! A time capsule set in 2008, this novel is a mixture of courtroom drama and chasing bad guys type action that had me riveted. While it deals with trans and cis women being sexually abused (as young people, in moderate detail FYI), the book never paints them as mere victims and gives them a sapphic happy ending! The heroine, Erin McCabe, is also a trans woman. I loved getting a peek at her law practice and relationships.

Lindy I really enjoyed the first book in this series 1y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Lindy I definitely want to read this one too! Unfortunately my library doesn't have it as a digital audiobook 😥 1y

Lindy @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Yeah, I feel you. What‘s the deal with having only the second book in a series in a library database? Can you suggest purchase? 1y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Lindy Yeah I'll suggest the purchase and keep my fingers crossed. 1y

I was in the mood for a good mystery and this one is hitting the spot! I've been meaning to check out this series. It's about Erin McCabe, a trans attorney who tends to take on complex cases and interesting clients. The author is also trans and an attorney, and you can tell she knows what's she's talking about. This case is about an apparent suicide that opens up a can of worms involving shady encryption software and human trafficking. #TransBooks
