From New York Times bestselling author and 15-time GRAMMY Award-winning artist Alicia Keys comes a new authentic and poignant coming-of-age young adult graphic novel, about finding the strength within when your whole world changes in an instant. Lolo Wright always thought she was just a regular fourteen-year-old dealing with regular family drama: her brother, James, is struggling with his studies; her dads business constantly teeters on the edge of trouble; and her mother . . . she left long ago. But then Lolos world explodes when a cop pulls a gun on James in a dangerous case of mistaken identities. Staring down the barrel, with no one else to help, Lolo discovers powers she never knew she had. Using only her mind, she literally throws the cop out of the way. Problem is that secrets like Lolos dont stay a secret for long. Skin, a dangerous dealer with designs on taking over the neighborhood, hears of Lolos telekinetic abilities and decides that he needs her in his crew. Skin might not have Lolos powers, but hes got nothing to lose and is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants. And what he wants is Lolo. Lolos not willing to let Skin use her to hurt the peopleand neighborhoodthat she loves. But its going to take a whole different kind of bravery to stand-up for whats right, especially after Lolos mom returns suddenly and turns Lolos whole world upside-down. For too long, its true, Lolos had her head in the clouds, but this time, its on her . . . and shes not backing down. Girl on Fire is a young adult graphic novel about a girl whos a flame. Its the first-ever graphic novel from beloved GRAMMY Award-winning artist Alicia Keys, co-written by Andrew Weiner and illustrated by Brittney Williams.

Large printed, quick graphic. Lolo finds she has powers after her brother is wrongly accused of theft. Her story has good showcasing of systematic racism and classism from classmates and the guy who “owns the hood”. Really liked her dad- doing the best interest for his kiddos. Lolo does a good just standing up for herself more throughout. Wish there‘d been more training or figuring the power; more draw backs as she reacted in anger sometimes

Looking through challenges to see if anything checks off any boxes. I read this one in April #pop22 ~ a book that fulfills your favorite prompt from a past popsugar challenge ~ a book that has fewer than 1,000 reviews on Goodreads

I love this song so I needed to check out Alicia Keys new book and I‘m so glad I did. A strong, female, teen heroine, with superpowers, yes please! For a short book, she did a nice job of including systematic racial problems within the pages which went well with the story. Great YA graphic novel, and the illustrations were fantastic!

This was so good. My only complaint is that I wish it had been drawn out a bit more. It definitely has the potential to be turned into a series.

This graphic novel by singer/songwriter Alicia Keys is really very good. It also has great potential to turn into a series. Strong young female character and it does address issues of today for the African American community. #readingchallenge2022

Well this was a treat. I m hoping this is the first in a series. Kept thinking how much my middle school students would like this.
