Until the Last of Me
Until the Last of Me | Sylvain Neuvel
6 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
Preorder the thrilling new instalment in a secret history of our world like no other . . . The First Rule is the most important: 'Always run, never fight'. For 3000 years Mia's family has shaped Earth's history to push humanity to the stars, making brutal, wrenching choices along the way. And now, in the year of 1968, Mia finds herself about to help launch the first people into space. She can't take them to the stars, not quite yet. But with her adversary almost upon her, and with the future of the planet at stake, it's becoming clearer that obeying the First Rule is no longer an option. For the first time since her line's first generation, Mia will have to choose to stand her ground, knowing that the overwhelming odds mean that she risks not only her bloodline, but also the future of the human race. Sylvain Neuvel's sci-fi thriller Until the Last of Me is a fast, darkly satirical alternate history of the 1960s space race in which the struggle isn't to be the first to the stars - but the last one standing. Praise for Sylvain Neuvel 'It's fascinating to see how Neuvel weaves together fact and fiction . . . a blast. Seriously clever' - SFX 'An alt-history with a difference. Traces the true story of the development of rocket science but adds an alien-conspiracy-theory edge . . . Good fun' - Guardian 'Wry narration, wired action . . . Fans of alternate history and intelligent sci-fi will love this' - Publishers Weekly

Pickpick

This sequel picks up only a few years after the conclusion of the first one- now Mia and Lola are the mother/daughter duo of the One Hundred but though the Space Race bore fruit of past labors, this pair turns their focus to the distant past. The Trackers deviate from their passed-down goals as well & the ominous ending has me quite eager for the next installment! An interesting & exciting blend of history and science fiction, I love the details!

This second book in the Take Them to the Stars series continues the propulsive story of the Kibsu, a mysterious mother-daughter pair driven to help humanity achieve spaceflight in order to save them from destruction. Both the Kibsu and their nemesis, the ruthless Tracker, veer from their paths in unexpected ways. This is a tale of persistence in the face of failure, of devastating loss and drastic action. I will wait in suspense for the next book.

I liked the first book in this series (though I don‘t remember it well), but I‘m just not able to get into this one. I read the first 25 pages, set it down, and just have no interest in picking it back up. Maybe I‘ll try again someday, but probably not.

shanaqui Ooh, that's unfortunate. I want to try the first book (I originally got an ARC) since I liked the Themis books (though I never read the last one of those yet either)... 2y
Hooked_on_books @shanaqui Yeah, it‘s a bummer for sure. I loved the Themis books, but I only liked the first book of this series. Oh well. He‘s got good stuff in him, so I haven‘t given up on his future books! 2y

I‘ve started my last print book for Gay May—and the first fifty pages seem to shift the focus away from bisexual Mia to the Trackers, so I might‘ve made a wee error. Oh well. Maybe some of them are bi, too?

This is the first time I‘ve ever read Neuvel in print. It‘s interesting to see how his style looks on the page instead of when performed by a full cast. #gaymay

And done!

There was, of course, a cliffhanger.

From the Moon Landing, to the Voyagers leaving the solar system, but also from ancient Egypt to Russia to China. This was interesting and had a lot of historical information and persons.

Especially liked the Author's Note at the end, where Neuvel gave background information on the female scientists throughout the ages that made it into the book.

Can't put it down.

Second book in the series. This time we follow the 100 and 101 from 1968 on.

Neuvel talks about the space race, the hole in the ozone layer, Voyager I + II; and there's a quest to find information from one of the ancestors.
