Demon Copperhead: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver
131 posts | 82 read | 8 reading | 90 to read
Kingsolver is a writer who can help us understand and navigate the chaos of these times. Minneapolis Star Tribune From the New York Times bestselling author of Unsheltered and Flight Behavior, a brilliant novel which enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young heros unforgettable journey to maturity. Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose. Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. Its the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead fathers good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they cant imagine leaving behind.

Kingsolver creates an immersive Appalachian environment and the title character is vivid and compelling. We watch the orphaned Demon trying to survive his childhood and young adulthood while the surrounding community is likewise abandoned to mass opioid addiction, death, and poverty. It is a difficult but fascinating story, with Kingsolver managing to find clever ways to weave in history about the area and the beginnings of the opioid epidemic.

I had to do the harder English, which was a time suck, reading books. Some of them though, I finished without meaning to. ...
Likewise the Charles Dickens one, seriously old guy, dead and a foreigner, but Christ Jesus did he get the picture on kids and orphans getting screwed over and nobody giving a rat's ass. You'd think he was from around here.

Around the time I topped and cut my first tobacco, we noticed the cigarette ads stopped playing. No idea why. If we'd known it was people thinking tobacco was dangerous for kids even to see on TV, with their eyes, we'd have found that dead hilarious. Our schools had smok- ing barrels. Teachers smoked on their breaks, kids at recess.

I didn‘t dislike this, I‘d say I enjoyed reading most of it and found the characters and world compelling and interesting. The reason it‘s a so so and not a pick is that I‘m a bit 🤷‍♀️ about why doing a retelling of David Copperfield with a lot more darkness and the humour all but completely removed was the plan. I‘d have thought the point of retelling Dickens was to balance darkness with humour?

TrishB In the special edition I read the author does an essay explaining the whys- which I thought was really helpful. (edited) 2w
JuniperWilde @TrishB ooh great tip. I‘ll look for that. I was completely taken by the MC and the authors insight into the lives of people living in poverty. As well as her capacity to represent language and speech developmentally across his childhood and youth. 2w
TrishB It was in the Waterstones special edition, but I‘m sure it will appear online at some point. 2w

Wow! This blew me away. I loved the narration by Charlie Thurston - hearing Demon‘s voice added certain depth for me as someone unfamiliar with the Appalachian accent. Kingsolver tells a similar story to Dopesick and Empire of Pain but through the narrative structure of David Copperfield. She also manages to weave in some of the history of the Appalachian mountains and the impact that has had. I thought it brilliant.

In this extraordinary book, author Barbara Kingsolver reimagines the story of David Copperfield in modern day Appalachia, with heartbreaking results. This was a slow read for me because Damon's voice was so vivid and alive, and he was a child so alone in the world--I had to brace for impact before diving back into the story each time. This book has the emotional impact of a novel-length Jason Isbell song--exquisitely painful and beautiful at once.

Kingsolver brought her unforgettable character, Demon, to life to show readers a firsthand perspective of living in and loving Appalachia. Though I haven‘t read David Copperfield (which this is based on) I am blown away by the storytelling which sheds light on the opioid crisis, poverty, generational trauma and more for those who may stereotype “hillbillies”. I love this book, a lifetime favorite. Highly recommended, from this hillbilly reader.

A harrowing journey but I rooted for Damon throughout the entire book. It helped that I've been sick and could dedicate long hours of reading to get through this 500+ page book in a couple of days. The writing is beautiful, filled with tragic situations but I kept hopeful throughout the book. I highly recommend.

This was my first Kingsolver book. It‘s a page-turner. It is told by a boy born to a teen mom battling drug addiction. His father died before he was born. It takes you on the rollercoaster of his life from foster care, child labor, athletic success, addiction, and disastrous loves. There were a few chapters near the middle, I felt prolonged the story but overall it‘s a good read.

I‘m a fan of Kingsolver, but for me this is definitely not her best. It‘s a bit too slow to develop initially, but when it hits its stride, it‘s a compelling story of a life impacted by parental loss and opioids. I also didn‘t care for the plot choice at the very end. Through much of this, I liked it a lot, but overall I was a little disappointed.

Hate to say it but soft pick. First half I was swept away by story, writing, characters. I grew up in timber country and so many similarities it made the read uncomfortable. My brother could be Demon but it was meth and not the hopeful ending. But in the 2nd half I felt hit over the head w/ the social/political message. I felt like it took over from the great characters Kingsolver had created.I‘ve already read Empire of Pain and Dopesick. ⬇️

SamAnne Kingsolver really knows her country and just nailed these addicts‘ lives and characters. All that rang true down to the dangerous swimming hole and rope swing (had those!). But the ending did not sit w/ me and I was bummed to see the romantic turn for Angus & Demon. Love platonic M/F relationships. Wish she had kept it that way. Ending felt rushed after such a middle-game slog. 2mo

This book is a retelling of David Copperfield, set in Virginia's Appalachia region. Through its wry and often hilarious narrator, it takes an unflinching look at child abuse, poverty, addiction - and how these issues are community problems rather than individual failings. It is a brutal story at times but it ended softly. There is tragedy, there is hope, there are problems, there are people fighting tooth and nail to make things better. (1/2)

Tea_and_Starstuff (2/2) The narrator voice was so distinct, it took me a minute to get into it. The starting lines illustrate it: “First, I got myself born. A decent crowd was on hand to watch, and they've always given me that much: the worst of the job was up to me, my mother being let's just say out of it.“

I think this might be a great experience on audio. Sampling it, the voice situates the story in Appalachia, and understands the pacing of the speech.
2mo
BarbaraJean Another one I really want to read! Kingsolver has been hit or miss for me over the years, but this one sounds like it‘ll fall into the side of her work that I love. One of these days I‘ll get to it! 1mo
Tea_and_Starstuff @BarbaraJean this was, I think, my first Kingsolver. I enjoyed it enough to bump other books by her up my list, so I'm curious the other ones you enjoyed if you think they'd land for me too. 1mo
BarbaraJean I LOVED Animal Dreams and The Bean Trees, but it's been so long since I've read them that maybe I should flip through and remind myself before I go telling you to read them! The Poisonwood Bible is also excellent, although there's some borderline abuse and religious...manipulation?...that might not land well for you. It's an intense book. I do think you'd like The Lacuna. You might try that one next (although Bean Trees is much shorter!) 1mo

I feel like I‘ve been beaten over the head one too many times by Kingsolver in this novel. 😖 Lecture tone was off putting at times and it just didn‘t feel very nuanced. In sum, opioid addiction is bad, the care system is bad, and Appalachian culture is unjustly maligned.

I haven‘t read David Copperfield, so perhaps that would have made the experience better.

SamAnne I get it. I‘ve had the same problem with other Kingsolver novels. I‘m about 65% in on this one. I‘m glad to be reading it because it hits close to home and feels spot on. I grew up in timber country in the PNW U.S. Sometimes I tell stories about my growing up that people find over the top or unbelievable (I had a stable family but messed up community). But I‘m also not a fan of being hit over the head. But ooh…feels like my hometown. 2mo
Tamra @SamAnne 👍🏾 I have no doubt it‘s an accurate portrayal of the crisis and how it has impacted individuals & communities. It was just too transparent as a reading experience for me. I grew up in a rural arctic community seriously impacted by alcohol & drugs. The trauma is devastating & generational. 😫 2mo
SamAnne @tamra oh gosh yes. Generational and devastating. My brother could be Demon Copperhead. But he had so many other opportunities and a level of privilege others around us did not. Agree it is a transparent read and prefer more subtle. And wow, your growing up experience! 2mo
Tamra @SamAnne we have serious things in common! My brother too was an addict (mainly alcohol) and certainly had privileges others did not, but that is the nature of the “demon” - pun intended. Sadly. ☹️ 2mo
SamAnne @Tamra ❤️❤️❤️ yes. My brother‘s demon was meth, now alcohol. He was so handsome and the 2nd string QB. Living on the streets now, and nothing I can do about it. He had so many chances, second chances. Yes, a demon. 2mo
Tamra @SamAnne so so relate & true! Such a loss. 2mo
Ruthiella @SamAnne @Tamra I‘ve only read two titles from Kingsolver and that‘s my takeaway too. She doesn‘t seem to trust that her readers will “get” it, so she lays it on/lectures. It bugs me too. 2mo
Tamra @Ruthiella Glad to know I‘m not the only one. 😌 2mo
BookNAround I feel the exact same way as @Ruthiella . My book club was very defensive when I said I found reading The Poisonwood Bible like being hit over the head with a 2x4 repeatedly. I did like Prodigal Summer a lot more but it sounds like I shouldn‘t rush out for this one. 2mo

I started the year with this novel and it‘s possible it‘ll be the best read of 2023. Written with deft insight into the Appalachian culture so awfully crippled by an opiate crisis - mostly recognized by the drug OxyContin, the story is told from the razor sharp wit and tragedy of young Demon born in Lee County, Virginia. The writing makes you laugh and also cry, there‘s so much depth and character it keeps Kingsolver up there with the best! 5⭐️‘s

Fantastic and immersive trip through the opioid crisis, and what's it like to truly be poor in the country. Strong symbolism around the ocean/water provided a steady and bright canvas that allowed the characters to go dark and be confused as they found their way through their stories. So many great characters, including the mountain setting itself.

OutAndAbout @perfectsinner I waffled too. Wasn‘t sure I was in for such a long book that sounded so depressing. But I‘m so glad I told the chance. The pure craftsmanship of how Kingsolver tells the story is worth the trip. While the story isn‘t an easy ride, the characters are ones you want to succeed, people you won‘t forget that may show you a side of the world you haven‘t seen before. It is an emotional investment, and one I recommend at least trying. 2mo

This is great, sprawling, epic storytelling. Kingsolver takes all the best parts of the Dickens original and shapes them into an incisive critique of US society, the capitalist drivers of pharmaceutical corporations, and indeed the broader economy. Demon‘s life is littered with trauma and misfortune, manufactured by social and economic deprivation. In spite of this, there are glimmers of hope all throughout this novel.

Book 13

Demon Copperhead is a novel that's an in-depth character analysis of the title character, written by him. Demon grows up in Appalachia with a mother who's an addict and eventually overdoses; he spends the rest of his childhood in foster care, unwanted by the only people he knows. It's extremely well-written, clever, and witty, but it's lengthy. His voice doesn't retain the same level of charm into adulthood.
