Five, six times I've read this letter. What am I to do, oh Lord? I feel like I did on Palm Sunday, when as a child I'd eat up all the jams-palm-fruit, citron, orange, prune, and pear jams—and madre Adelina would tell me I was going to hell for having such a sweet tooth.

And again, the war, it'll stay with forever, the memory of it, it'll eat away at us for a lifetime like a worm, at us and our children, perhaps even our grandchildren. Now our young people are being taken from us and the end in sight. And many, many years will pass before the of this country will forget what happened.

It was heartbreaking seeing Barcelona full of scraps and rotting trash. Everything reeked of rotten eggs and boiled cabbage. A lot of houses had caved in and chairs, tables and sometimes cribs and cloth dolls would jut out from among the ruins. Ruins always make me sad. Whenever we'd go on a day trip to see a castle like Burriac and Tona, I'd look at the lonely, unprotected walls and the tears would come pouring down my face...
