1 post | 1 read | 3 to read
In this short primer, Gorski and Perry explain what white Christian nationalism is and is not; when it first emerged and how it has changed; where it's headed and why it threatens democracy. Tracing the development of this ideology over the course of three centuriesand especially its influence over the last three decadesthey show how nhite Christian nationalism motivates the anti-democratic, authoritarian, and violent impulses on display in our current political moment.

Nothing like starting out the weekend reading about existential threats to U.S. democracy! 😝 Great book, though. It‘s short yet provides lots of historical context for the “deep story” undergirding white Christian nationalism. I love how much data the sociologist authors include from their survey research. P.S. The book is far from anti-Christian and calls for coalition building between religious and secular folks across the political spectrum.

Christine The New Yorker politics podcast had a really good interview with co-author Samuel L. Perry the other day: https://www.newyorker.com/podcast/politics-and-more/how-white-christian-national... 2y
