A Matter of Time
A Matter of Time: The tense and thrilling hostage thriller, nominated for the McIlvanney Prize | Claire Askew
2 posts | 2 read
At 8am the first shots are fired. At 1pm, the police establish the gunman has a hostage. By 5pm, a siege is underway. At 9pm, DI Helen Birch walks, alone and unarmed, into an abandoned Borders farmhouse to negotiate with the killer. One day. One woman. One chance to get everyone out alive. The outstanding new novel from the highly acclaimed author of All the Hidden Truths and What You Pay For - both shortlisted for the CWA Golden Dagger.

This was a good read. The pace was good, and the action took place over the course of a single day (or rather a 24-hour period). Might be fun to read the chapters at the actual hours specified in the chapter titles!

#4 in the DI Birch series - this worked well as a standalone. I never felt lost or like I was missing important details, although there were allusions to things I‘m sure happened in previous novels. I liked the MC a lot. It was well-written and held my attention. The ending was slightly annoying as it felt like a convenient way to tie up loose ends while creating potential drama for the next book. I definitely want to read more of the series.

rabbitprincess I‘ve read the other three books in this series and like it a lot. Looking forward to this one! (edited) 2y
