The Book of Phobias and Manias
The Book of Phobias and Manias: A History of the World in 99 Obsessions | Kate Summerscale
2 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
A Times Best Non-fiction Book for Autumn 2022 A captivating A-Z from the award-winning author of The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher 'Fascinating... Exquisitely detailed and consistently insightful' Publishers Weekly 'A new book from Summerscale is always a treat. She does vast amounts of research, and then manages to let go of it, and take flight in prose that is both forensic and conversational ... Her sub-title might echo Neil MacGregor, but this reads more like a book by Oliver Sacks, with dashes of Roald Dahl' Maggie Fergusson, Spectator Do you recoil in arachnophobic horror at the sight of a spider - or twitch with nomophobia when you misplace your mobile phone? Do your book-buying habits verge on bibliomania? Perhaps you find yourself mired in indecision and uncertainty? (Would it be reassuring to give this a name: aboulomania?) Our phobias and manias are contradictory and multiple: deeply intimate, yet forged by the times we live in - the commonest form of anxiety disorder, but rarely given a formal diagnosis. Plunge into this rich, surprising and fascinating A-Z compendium to discover how our fixations have taken shape, from pre-history to the present day, as bestselling author Kate Summerscale deftly traces the threads between the past and present, the psychological and social, the personal and the political. 'Every phobia and mania makes us think about ourselves differently. Thought-provoking and such fun' Ian Mortimer, bestselling author of The Time Traveller's Guides

My book subscription revealed! As a spider hater I‘m not loving the cover - but I do love Kate Summerscale so maybe I‘ll wrap in brown paper before I start reading! 🤣🤣🤣

Monica5 😂😂 I definitely would have to wrap it 😂😂 1y

squirrelbrain This is the one time when you could do with one of those really annoying ‘book club‘ stickers that we always complain about, strategically placed! 1y

Soubhiville I‘m with you on the spiders, but that sounds like a good read. 1y
AmyG It oddly looks fascinating but as someone who can be neurotic….I wouldn‘t want to read anything that will just give me ideas. 😳 1y
Mitch @squirrelbrain absolutely! 1y
Mitch @Soubhiville im not sure that the publisher made the best choice - putting one of the most popular phobias on the cover - and expect us readers to put our hands on it! 😮 1y
Mitch @AmyG I will promise not to share! And hopefully by the time I‘ve finished my personal phobia count hasn‘t increased! 😅 1y

Pickpick

This is a really interesting read – though you might have to resist the urge to start pathologising every inclination or distaste once you‘ve read it. Only 1 in 8 people with a phobia seek help, so I think it was really great of Summerscale to wisely include many comforting examples of people who have undertaken treatment with great success.
