Flickering Heart
Flickering Heart | Tricia T. LaRochelle
1 post | 1 read
Eighteen-year-old Sara Browne is about to step off a cliff. She is taking a giant leap into the world of college-a normal transition for most, but not for Sara. A car accident that scarred her body and soul and left her orphaned, has dictated six years of isolation, but that was all in her past. She is ready to leave those dark days behind. Her new goals: make a new friend, be irresponsible, and maybe even date. That last thing Sara is looking for is a complication, but that is precisely what she finds in the hot six-foot-three blond named Scott Williams, who she meets at the beginning of the school year. Sara is drawn to Scott in a way that she cannot explain, and he seems just as into her. She wants to trust her heart, but Scott's promiscuous past keeps creeping into their lives. Jealous ex-girlfriends are one thing, but the stranger who keeps sending Sara threatening letters is far worse. Someone is determined to destroy her relationship with Scott and the life Sara is trying so hard to rebuild. By the time Sara finds out who is behind all the trouble, her life is in shambles and she must fight with every ounce of strength and courage to save herself and the man she loves.

I was asked to read this one for a competition that I‘m helping to judge. Unfortunately it wasn‘t my cup of tea. It‘s a NA romance/thriller set on a college campus with a naive 18 yo Sara Browne, who tragically lost her parents at 12, stepping out of her isolation into the world. She meets upperclassman Scott Williams, a soccer star and is drawn to him even though he is surrounded by jealous “mean girls” who try to thwart them. While the writing🔻

robinb was OK, the characters felt like stereotypes and were not appealing to me. There‘s a best friend/roommate, a few villains and an on/off romance. Obviously there‘s more to the storyline, but the author asked for no spoilers (however, I would like to say that there is definitely a content warning that should be included). The first 3/4 of the book was fairly routine, 🔻 1y
robinb but then the plot went off the rails, and I was left confused and frustrated by the climax/resolution.
Just not for me. I probably would have bailed if not for the judging job. 2/5⭐️ Just a mention, this is apparently to be first in series so hopefully things will improve.
