Neon Roses
Neon Roses | Rachel Dawson
Eluned Hughes is stuck. It's 1984 in a valley in south Wales: the miners' strike is ravaging her community; her sister's swanned off with a Thatcherite policeman; and her boyfriend Lloyd keeps bringing up marriage. And if they play '99 Red Balloons' on the radio one more time, she might just lose her mind. Then the fundraising group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners comes down from London, and she meets June, a snaggle-toothed blonde in a too-big leather jacket. Suddenly, Eluned isn't stuck any more - she's in freefall. June's an artist and an activist, living in a squat in Camden. With June, Eluned can imagine a completely different - and exciting - life for herself. But as her family struggles with the strike, and her relationship with her sister deteriorates, should she really leave it all behind? From the Valleys to the nightclubs of Cardiff, London and Manchester, NEON ROSES is a heartwarming, funny and a little bit filthy queer coming-of-age story with a cracking '80s soundtrack.

Read after Helen‘s review and concur completely with Helen‘s review. Love 80s politics, music refs. Etc.

Loved this! Set in 1980s Wales against the background of the Miners‘ Strike and the looming AIDS crisis, Eluned struggles through life with little money and no prospects other than marrying her miner boyfriend.

Then Lesbians and Gays Support The Miners arrive in town on a fundraising mission, and everything changesas Eluned meets June. Loved all the 80s references; outfits, music etc. Be warned; the sex is rather explicit. 😳

squirrelbrain @TrishB I think you‘d like this one. @Leniverse - a Welsh-set book to add to your new library list?! 9mo
squirrelbrain #pop23 #romancewithafatlead It‘s certainly not a ‘classic‘ romance but I‘m going with it. And with this book I‘m all done with #pop for this year! (edited) 9mo

RaeLovesToRead Ooh... I will use this for the same prompt! I don't have a lot of romance on my shelf 9mo
squirrelbrain @RaeLovesToRead - I was just thinking that this book is what Rosewater *should* have been….I mean, completely different era and very gritty but still…it‘s a queer coming-of-age story that I felt invested in, which I didn‘t with Rosewater. 9mo
Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻❤️ 9mo
LeeRHarry Sounds like the film Pride in book form so I would totally be down for that. Stacked! 😊 9mo

TrishB Oh sounds great thanks 👍🏻 9mo
squirrelbrain Thanks @OriginalCyn620 ! Congrats to you too for (nearly!) finishing. 🎉 9mo
squirrelbrain I haven‘t seen the film @LeeRHarry @CarolynM but just read a synopsis and it certainly sounds like it. ( maybe x rated in parts though!). The big Bronski Beat concert is featured and the MCs sister is going out with a nasty policeman so there‘s that angle too. 9mo
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain I have the DVD of Pride - I could send it to you if you'd like to see it. 9mo
squirrelbrain Aw thank you @jenniferw88 , but we don‘t have a DVD player any more! I‘m sure I can find it somewhere on the various TV channels. 9mo
