Fairy Tale Fashion
Fairy Tale Fashion | Colleen Hill, Patricia Mears, Ellen Sampson, Kiera Vaclavik

A conceptually innovative and visually stunning investigation of the interconnected worlds of high fashion and fairy tales Dress plays a crucial role in fairy tales, signaling the status, wealth, or vanity of particular characters, and symbolizing their transformation. Fairy tales often provide little information beyond what is necessary to a plot, but clothing and accessories are frequently vividly described, enhancing the sense of wonder integral to the genre. Cinderella s glass slipper is perhaps the most famous example, but it is one of many enchanted or emblematic pieces of dress that populate these tales. This is the first book to examine the history, significance, and imagery of classic fairy tales through the lens of high fashion. A comprehensive introduction to the topic of fairy tales and dress is followed by a series of short essays on thirteen stories: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Fairies, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Rapunzel, Furrypelts, The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen, The Swan Maidens, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," and "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Generously illustrated, these stories are creatively and imaginatively linked to examples of clothing by Comme des Garc, ons, Dolce and Gabbana, Charles James, and Alexander McQueen, among many others."

I love to visit museums and galleries with friends, but sometimes I like to be #onmyown and take my time. This is a book that I purchased at an enchanting fashion exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC that I viewed solo. #musicalnewyear

vivastory I definitely prefer going by myself to exhibits, I don't feel rushed. 5y

ferskner (I'm the same: sometimes it's fun to discuss, but usually I feel rushed.) 5y

Velvetfur I'm pretty sure that's the exhibition I went to with my sister, in January 2016! Is that the right time frame for this same one? 5y
Cinfhen That cover 🙌🏻 I thought we were well suited when we went to view The Lady In Gold. That was really fun, Diana. Hope we can plan another fun outing for August 5y
DivineDiana @Velvetfur I think you‘re right! It ran from 1/15/16 through 4/16! 5y
DivineDiana I know! Isn‘t that cover gorgeous? We were perfectly suited for the Lady in Gold viewing! Hoping the same! 😘 5y
Velvetfur @DivineDiana Yes it's the same one! It was fantastic wasn't it?! I do like to attend exhibitions alone (and usually do a sketch or two) but often like to have someone with me who is arty like me so we can discuss things like technique, 'feeling', and comparisons to other artists or art movements. Because I'm pretentious like that 😛 5y
DivineDiana @Velvetfur It was a favorite! 5y
