Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk
Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk | Kathleen Rooney
Its the last day of 1984, and 85-year-old Lillian Boxfish is about to take a walk. As she traverses a grittier Manhattan, a city anxious after an attack by a still-at-large subway vigilante, she encounters bartenders, bodega clerks, chauffeurs, security guards, bohemians, criminals, children, parents, and parents-to-bein surprising moments of generosity and grace. While she strolls, Lillian recalls a long and eventful life that included a brief reign as the highest-paid advertising woman in Americaa career cut short by marriage, motherhood, divorce, and a breakdown. A love letter to city lifehowever shiny or sleazyLillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney paints a portrait of a remarkable woman across the canvas of a changing America: from the Jazz Age to the onset of the AIDS epidemic; the Great Depression to the birth of hip-hop.

Utterly charming! Loved spending time with Ms Boxfish while meandering around NYC. Thankful for the #Booked20 #winter2 prompt, hat/head covering on cover, to compel me to finally read this after having it for 2+ years. #MountTBR @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

My last book for 2019, and what a perfect way to finish out a year! Quiet, reflective, yet full of emotion, this book features Lillian Boxfish as she reminisces about the good and the bad in her life, while walking the streets of NYC on New Years Eve 1984. Quite a remarkable character, full of grit and determination and yet a vulnerability that was almost her undoing.

Final time for #24B42020

Last post for 2019! While the initial chapters of this audiobook didn't really pique my interest, I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. Lillian is a witty, endearing, no-nonsense octogenarian who revisits various events in her life while walking through her beloved New York City on the eve of a new year. She is one of those fictional characters whom I'd love to meet and enjoy a leisurely lunch with while savouring an interesting conversation. 3.5⭐️

Three Five-stars in my newest grid as i near the end of a year of reading - I wasn‘t expecting that! I‘ll tag Lillian since I kind of want to be her when I grow up!

5* = Loved It, want non-reader IRL friends to read. I do/will own a physical copy. A+
4*= Liked it a lot, would love to discuss. Solid B
3*=Meh, no need to discuss. Average C
2*=Nope D
1*=DNF F

LiteraryinLititz I like your rating system! 1mo
marleed @LiteraryinLititz Thank you. I find it helps me remember books read if I give them a grade and I can do that best with my 5 stars associated to a traditional A-F school grading. When I look at my year, most of what I read got a 4*B followed closely by 4.5*A- Only 2 books got my 2*D rating! 1mo

Perhaps it is my age, that I love to walk, that I love big cities. Or that one of my favorite people is an octogenarian who speaks with such eloquence that I stop and listen to anything she has to say.

Another book btw Pick and So-So. I really liked Lillian's character and learning about her advertising career in the 30s and 50s but the rest of the book was blah and too slow. However, Rooney's writing and structure was great. Also, the entire plot happened in one night. Hmmm.

I enjoyed how the walk Lillian takes on New Years Eve 1984 is interwoven with the story of her life in advertising in the 1920s, how she forged her way in a man‘s business and how she felt when that ended for motherhood. Lillian is an intriguing character; formidable, intelligent and enquiring yet with a sadness and a hard edge at times. An unusual read that makes you want to walk New York City, drink negronis and wear bright yellow tights!

It‘s New Years Eve 1984 and Lillian Boxfish, aged 84(ish), is taking a walk through Manhattan. Formerly the highest paid advertising woman in the country, Lillian looks back on the highs and lows of a long life and career as she meets the diverse denizens populating a 1980s NYC in decline. Lillian‘s perceptions of the city and its people, both past and present, are so authentic, full of wisdom, generosity, and a welcome touch of the bitter.

Having volunteered in nursing homes when I was younger, I know that the older people get, the more interesting stories they have to tell. You just have to be ready to sit back and go on a journey with them. I loved Lillian Boxfish's story. She is a character I want to keep with me and call up when I need strength.
