Amusing memoir on the real-life family that launched the vintage 70s TV show. I had no idea the author lived in my city. What fun to learn more trivia about my neighborhood! Braden wanted his kids to be avid readers like him. When he put some classics on a high shelf and warned the kids not to read them, they did! Includes dated stories about hippies, the new morality & nonconformists, but still a fun read.

PurpleyPumpkin Ahhh, I remember this show! I watched it pretty regularly and, at the time, I loved it. I had no idea that it was based on reality! But then, most good stories are. 👍🏽 Glad you enjoyed! 3y

I recently watched some of the first season of Eight is Enough, on DVD. Of course I decided to look for more information, and when I did, I found that the show was based on a book; this book.

Overall, I was amazed at how accurately the show portrayed each of the 10 people it depicts. As I read the book, I was continually astonished that the voices in the book were the ones that I knew from the show. I think that's pretty amazing.

merelybookish @Cinfhen Right! Cause he was the "bad" boy in the family. I still remember their names: David, Mary, Susan, Nancy, Joni, Elizabeth, Tommy & Nicolas. :) 6y
AlaMich I was a big fan of this show as a kid!! 6y
Cinfhen Wow! #impressive memory 🙌🏻 6y
Betty Enjoyed this show a lot! Diana Hyland (John Travolta's older girlfriend) was the first wife on the show; got cancer and had to leave before dying. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I remember this show!! I liked it as a kid because I think I was around the same age as the Nicholas character (that was the little boy‘s name, right?) 6y
merelybookish @Betty That's sad. She must have been fairly young. I don't remember her. Just the second actress who played the stepmom. 6y
merelybookish @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I was close in age to Nicholas too. My best friend growing up was the youngest of nine, so I think she identified a lot with his character. ☺️ 6y
Betty @merelybookish She played John Travolta's mom in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Considerably older than him. She was the love of his life 6y
Bklover I loved that show! Had such a crush on Willie Ames! 6y
LeahBergen Such a flashback! 😂 6y
Centique I loved this too! 6y
