Ghost on Black Mountain
Ghost on Black Mountain | Ann Hite
6 posts | 7 read | 12 to read
ONCE A PERSON LEAVES THE MOUNTAIN, THEY NEVER COME BACK, NOT REALLY. THEYRE LOST FOREVER. Nellie Clay married Hobbs Pritchard without even noticing he was a spell conjured into a man, a walking, talking ghost story. But her mama knew. She saw it in her tea leaves: death. Folks told Nellie to get off the mountain while she could, to go back home before it was too late. Hobbs wasnt nothing but trouble. Hed even killed a man. No telling what else. That mountain was haunted, and soon enough, Nellie would feel it too. One way or another, Hobbs would get what was coming to him. The ghosts would see to that. . . . Told in the stunning voices of five women whose lives are inextricably bound when a murder takes place in rural Depression-era North Carolina, Ann Hites unforgettable debut spans generations and conjures the best of Southern folk-loremystery, spirits, hoodoo, and the incomparable beauty of the Appalachian landscape.

Bailedbailed

First bail of the readathon. One of my goals for this year is to clear out some space on my shelves. This was an ARC from 2011, and I have no idea why I‘ve been carting it around from house to house.

Bookwomble Dusty ❤ 5y
Kimbono @Bookwomble I‘m late to the party with Dusty but wow, is there a better song than No Easy Way Down?!?! 5y
Bookwomble @Kimbono Well, I do love her version of "If You Go Away". ? https://youtu.be/wyCVxPEPx5Y 5y

Bookwomble @Kimbono You've for me listening to Dusty in Memphis, and No Easy Way Down is a gorgeous song. She has such a pure, emotive voice. She and Scott Walker would be my dream duet. 5y
Kimbono @Bookwomble I had not heard of Scott Walker. What an interesting voice! I think he and Dusty would have made for a great duet. 5y
Bookwomble Scott had the best voice. He was American, but better known in the UK with his 60s/70s group, The Walker Brothers (none of them had that surname and they weren't brothers!) Scott's first four solo albums are classic, winning him celeb fans like David Bowie. His last few albums were avant garde experimental works, still with his distinctive vocals - I'm gushing because I love him so much! Sadly, he died earlier this year 🖤❤🖤 5y
Kimbono @Bookwomble I‘m going to have to spend some time and go down a Scott Walker YouTube rabbit hole 😀. I feel the same way about Jeff Buckley as you do about Scott Walker. I bet I‘ve listened to his album Grace at least a thousand times. ❤️ 5y
Bookwomble @Kimbono If you search You Tube for Scott ave Dusty, there's a duet of them from Dusty's TV show - audio only unfortunately, but it's a great song. I love Jeff Buckley, and has father, Tim, as well. It's tragic how young they both died. 5y

Mehso-so

I'm a little torn on how I feel about this book. At first I was more concerned about domestic violence than ghosts, but it was indeed a ghost story. However, I was a little bothered by the vast amount of characters who had the "gift" to see ghosts. The ratio was a little high in my opinion. The different perspectives worked for the most part, but it was a little jarring at first. Overall, I liked this book but wasn't necessarily frightened.
