From the author ofThe Spanish Bowcomes a lush, harrowing novel based on the real life story of Rosalie Rayner Watson, one of the most controversial scientistsand mothersof the 20th centuryThe mother begins to destroy the child the moment its born, wrote the founder of behaviorist psychology, John B. Watson, whose 1928 parenting guide was revered as the child-rearing bible. For their dangerous and mawkish impulses to kiss and hug their child, most mothers should be indicted for psychological murder.Behave is the story of Rosalie Rayner, Watsons ambitious young wife and the mother of two of his children. In 1920, when she graduated from Vassar College, Rayner was ready to make her mark on the world. Intelligent, beautiful, and unflappable, she won a coveted research position at Johns Hopkins assisting the charismatic celebrity psychologist John B. Watson. Together, Watson and Rayner conducted controversial experiments on hundreds of babies to prove behaviorist principles. They also embarked on a scandalous affair that cost them both their jobsand recast the sparkling young Rosalie Rayner, scientist and thinker, as Mrs. John Watson, wife and conflicted, maligned mother, just another woman behind a great man. With Behave, Andromeda Romano-Lax offers a provocative fictional biography of Rosalie Rayner Watson, a woman whose work influenced generations of Americans, and whose legacy has been lost in the shadow of her husbands. In turns moving and horrifying, Behave is a richly nuanced and disturbing novel about science, progress, love, marriage, motherhood, and what all those things cost a passionate, promising young woman.

I loved this book. It was different from what I usually read but amazing just the same. As a former psychology student, it amazed me that the experiment of little Albert was as accurate as it was. I also liked how Rosalie did not conform to the standards of the time. She did her own thing. The end is the best.

My awesome (and not so awesome) #bookmail today!! First off, a belated Christmas present from @Mdargusch , a gift card to Juniper Books!! I don‘t even know what to order!! I need to start plotting. And then part of my most recent Thrift Books haul. Let‘s just say, I‘m not impressed. Follow up post coming shortly!

emilyhaldi Oh man, what a bummer with those thrift books 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 good thing for that juniper gift card! Can‘t wait to see what you get with it 👏🏻 6y
Mdargusch Ugh. I hope my scratch and dent books from bookoutlet aren‘t that bad. 😬 6y
Reviewsbylola Book Outlet is far and away better than Thrift Books. I‘ve never had an issue with their scratch and dent copies and a lot of times the prices are cheaper than Thrift Books. Book Outlet has spoiled me. @Mdargusch 6y

#TBRtemptation post! This fictional bio seems to fall in the same vein as Fowler's "Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald". Rosalie Rainer graduated from Vasser College in 1920. She was intelligent & beautiful, & won a coveted research position at Johns Hopkins with celebrity psychologist John B. Watson. Their experiments on children were controversial. Along the way, they fell scandalously fell in love, married, & had kids. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Marchpane What a fantastic name this author has! 7y

I am GGG when it comes to the bookshelf in our bedroom. Hubby the artist gets the bottom two shelves for his art books and magazines. I have the top two for the recents/borrowed books in my life. #augustphotochallenge

Karli @Hooked_on_books - books are cuddly, right? @KimG - your awesome loans are always near me! 8y
Karli Oh, and full disclosure - I bought the bookshelf for him for Christmas a few years ago. I did let him use it by himself...a little. 8y
Hooked_on_books 100%! And I see what you mean--this is totally similar to mine! 8y
