13 Reasons Why | Jay Asher

My pick for #JubilantJuly Day 26: #Controversial is #13ReasonsWhy written by #JayAsher , screenplay adapted by #Netflix - I did NOT like this #book for a few reasons, but most importantly because it lacked major #character #development. HOWEVER, I absolutely loved the #Netflix series and the corresponding #BeyondTheReasons after-show. I thought Netflix did a great job developing the characters and tackling the serious issue of #teensuicide

TrishB Funny how opinions are so split on this 😀 I really like the book and not the series. I thought the series actually went too far into sensationalism and I didn't like the messing about with the tape orders etc. It did good for awareness raising though. 7y
Jess7 @TrishB I very rarely choose the tv series/movie over the book, but in this case, I watched the series first and felt like the book rushed through everything. I didn't care about any of the characters and I didn't feel like it showed the horrible impact that suicide has on the people left behind. I felt like the series did a good job showing that suicide is anything but glamorous. But I agree I'm happy all of this is provoking a discussion 7y
Onceuponatime Interesting because I did not like the Netflix series! From the viewpoint of a teacher, mother of teens, and former bully victim, I found myself "not buying it." I did not think it accurately represented the high school social scene or the path to suicide. That said, the final episodes were horrible to watch and definitely let me thinking, as I'm sure they did for many people! 7y

Jess7 @Onceuponatime I understand how you feel about not being able to buy into all of it. I think there were certainly some liberties the show took to keep watchers entertained and the suspense building that might not have otherwise happened IRL. I just found it addicting. I do think if teens watch it parents should open up a dialogue with them to discuss. 7y
Jess7 @Onceuponatime Despite how difficult some of the scenes were to watch, I did appreciate the care the series took in making sure the rape and suicide scenes looked and felt real. I think in doing so, they did a good job of showing how painful, real and final suicide is. Did you watch the after show, #BehindTheReasons ? 7y
Jess7 On a #lessseriousnote I had a hard time watching the series at first bc the main character #ClayJensen looks like a cross between an old #exboyfriend from 10+ years ago and one of my youngest #brotherinlaw 😂🤔😣🤣😜 @Onceuponatime @TrishB @britt_brooke (edited) 7y
heylaurenmack The only real problem I had with the Netflix version was after Clay gets hit by that car earlyish in the episodes. WHAT PARENT LETS THEIR KID JUST GO WALKABOUT WHEN HE PROBABLY HAS A CONCUSSION?! 7y
Onceuponatime @Jess7 No, I didn't know there was another show! I'll have to watch it. I was probably just ready to be done with the series. 😆 you're right though, the show was a good starting point to talk about serious issues with teenagers. 7y
Jess7 @heylaurenmack not all parents act the way we think they should, 😏☹️but he was 17 I think and he didn't tell them he got hit by a car. I don't have children, but I can see how it would be difficult to raise a teenage boy (almost an adult) and I can definitely see how my husband's parents wouldn't have made him go to the doctor if he said he was fine. But I agree, if it was my son I would hope, I would of inquired more. (edited) 7y
Jess7 @Onceuponatime please do watch it and let me know what you think on here after you do. I think it was only about 30 minutes or so. I wish they would of made it an episode of the original series instead of a separate show, but it's worth watching. The cast and crew (including the producers) talk about the issues involved in the series and how and why they did certain things in the show. I really liked it and thought it was a good wrap up. 7y
Chibi I wasn't a fan of either to be honest. I stand with CAMH on the issue and just... ugh. No. Not a fan. But I'm glad you liked it :) 7y
