Book 8 of my spotlight on fave graphic fic for #12booksof2023 is Mohamed's “Shubeik Lubeik.“ At a kiosk in Cairo 3 wishes are sold to strangers who are in vastly different life circumstances, but are each at a crossroads in life: one is dealing with depression, another is dealing with life after the loss of a loved one & the third is trying to maintain their religious principals. The artwork in this is fantastic, but it does not overshadow (cont)

What a gem of a graphic novel. Vibrant in illustrations and story, Shubeik Lubeik tells the tale of a world where wishes are commodities that are bought and sold. I loved how Mohamed uses this to look into class differences. What happens when a poor person gets an expensive first class wish? The govt assumes it‘s stolen. Also, it‘s fascinating how wrong wishes can turn out. Wishing to lose weight? Watch out, you might lose some limbs. Delightful.
I enjoyed returning to this alternate history Egypt. This time we follow another investigator when he is called about a tram car that is haunted & must figure out what kind of djinn or spirit is wreaking havoc. The characters were great & the story kept you on the edge of your seat. I think I'll go back to audio for the rest of this series though, the descriptive writing is better suited to listen to imo

First in Cairo trilogy this is a family saga about a Muslim family living in Cairo during the early 1900s under the English protectorate.
We follow the strict Muslim father who imposes strict rules at home only to go out drinking and carousing, his obedient 2nd wife, his 2 sons & 3 daughters.
I really enjoyed this and intend to finish the trilogy.

The office of the Superintendent of Tram Safety & Maintenance at Ramses Station had all the decor befitting someone who had been elevated - or likely pushed along the lines of patronage into such a vaulted position.
This was a really interesting, fun, fantastical novella. It was a quick dip into an alternate Egypt in 1912 filled with the supernatural. We follow Special Investigator Fatma as she unravels the mystery of a curious suicide and adventures through magic rituals, angels, and the undead in order to stop a bigger plot that risks the world.
Really enjoyed this one & looking forward to learning more about this alternate history in the rest of the series
The first half could not keep my attention. I really can't tell you much that happened during it. I almost abandoned the book because of it. However, I kept going. The last half was really good. I wish it all had been like that.
