These two lines specifically caught my attention in the Tyler translation of chapter 6.

The first seems an entertaining translation to me, and I didn‘t believe a word of what Genji was saying as he convinced Taifu to help him visit Suetsumuhana.

The second is only a page later as Taifu convinces Suetsumuhana to listen to what he has to say. From my perspective, he seems to do whatever he wants.

batsy So true. I think a little later in Chap 6 he proceeds to break protocol and slip inside the room when he's not supposed to. In the Washburn translation: "Taifu was shocked by his audacity". Genji gets away with quite a bit, doesn't he ? #Genji6 5y
Daisey @batsy Yes, it took him no time at all to decide to go in anyway. 5y

A moment afterwards he suddenly became aware of her main defect. It was her nose. He could not help looking at it. It reminded him of the trunk of Samantabhadra‘s steed! Not only was it amazingly prominent, but (strangest of all) the tip which drooped downwards a little was tinged with pink… #Genji6 - Safflower

saresmoore There is so much nuance in the poetry and metaphors. I found the safflower dig to be especially clever (thanks to a footnote explanation). 5y
Daisey @Lindy @saresmoore Yes, I am incredibly grateful for the footnotes to explain many of these references! I‘m appreciating the poetry more as I get further into the book. 5y
Lindy @saresmoore @Daisey I like that there‘s more mention of women choosing their own sexual escapades in this chapter. 5y
batsy I agree, the symbolism of the poetry is so rich (and in this chapter, amusing, though I felt so bad for this woman deemed unattractive!) It was also interesting to me how her lack of allure was compounded by her inability to write or respond in poetry; this is seen as a significant character flaw. 5y

In the gentle spring sunshine the trees were already shimmering with a haze of new-grown buds. Among them it was the plum trees that gave the surest promise, for already their blossoms were uncurling, like lips parted in a faint smile. #Genji6

Chujo would become insufferably cock-a-hoop if he got into his head the idea that the princess had transferred her affections from Genji to himself. #Genji6 (Waley translation)

I Really enjoyed Chapter Six. “Of course, as you know by now, when it came to any relationship involving Genji, few women could resist the seduction of his words or keep their distance from him.” #genji6

BookishMarginalia Of course! 5y
