The Family Moskat: A Novel | Isaac Bashevis Singer, A. H. Gross

I was drawn into this novel almost against my better judgement, because I don't like family sagas normally. But after reading Hadley Freeman's House of Glass I was curious about traditional Jewish family life between the wars in Europe. I learned a lot! But the continuing family dramas and fireworks started to give me bad dreams, so I bailed out.

Hands down my favourite writer. It‘s a gift given to few but it was poured out on him. Spellbinding, memorable, and profound.

“In stories time does not vanish. Neither do men and animals. For the writer and his readers all creatures go in living forever. What happened long ago is still present.”

The short stories in this read like folktales- but with a bit of a twist. For example, some were narrated by demons. Overall, I liked this book and want to try reading some of Singer's novels.

AlaMich I listened to the audio of Gimpel the Fool (the story itself) recently was very entertained. It was read by a stage actor who was pretty famous in his day, and it really was like someone reading me a folktales the way it was meant to be read. 😊 7y

#Booktober : #awardwinning - This short story collection has been on my to-read list for really long time. Isaac Bashevis Singer won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1978. He wrote in Yiddish and interestingly, the English translator of the title story in the collection, Saul Bellows was also a Nobel laureate- he won the prize in literature in 1976. #Jewlit

AlaMich I just listened to the audio of this, read by Theodore Bikel, a pretty famous stage actor "in his day," as my father the drama major would say. It was really good. 7y
