There are many instances of great beauty throughout the novel, especially in the Realm of the Elves. What do you think this beauty signifies? What do you think the elves signify?

BookwormAHN I think the elves are definitely considered higher beings. And I've always wondered if Tolkien meant for them to be angelish. 4y

JazzFeathers I think the Elves represent a possible balance between what nature offers and what menkind is capable of. So in the Lord of the Rings they represent all the good things that existed in the beginning, before the world was corrupted. Though, as we know, Elves themselves are far from being perfect and incorruptible 😉 #FellowshipOfTolkien 4y

How does Tolkien define Good and Evil? Is there a fine line or does it become muddied? Are they easy to distinguish in the book?

BookwormAHN I think with the exception of orcs, good and evil is somewhat gray and more dependent on choice and intent but he also seems to give very little room for redemption to his characters. 4y

JazzFeathers I disagree @BookwormAHN Redemption are always on the card (as both Boromir and Denethor show). But there are people who willingly disavow redemtion and those will never find it. It is in the end, always a matter of choices. 4y

JazzFeathers As for the question, l've seldom read another story where good and evil were more mixed and grey-shaded. 4y

Why do you think Tolkien chooses his hero to be a hobbit instead of a more powerful creature of Middle Earth such as a man, a dwarf or an elf? What is the significance of the hobbit's role in the story?

BookwormAHN I think the quote from Gildor "even the smallest person can change the course of the future" is what Tolkien set out to prove with the hobbits. 4y

JazzFeathers Tolkien lived through the European Civil War, as some historians call it. That period between WWI and WWII that destroyed and then recreated the Western world. There were many uncommon people who (in good and bad) caused/handled this. But in the end, it was people who destroyed the old world and created the new one. People who accepted or rejected. Everyday people. I think this is what Tolkien tried to potray in the Lord of the Rings. 4y

JazzFeathers Well, the Ring clearly means power in all its form, and by power l mean the possibility to handle the lives of other people more than doing what one wants. Coming to a position where you think that what you are doing is right and everybody else should therefore follow/obey you. It's the destruction of freewill. 4y

Why do you think Frodo was chosen as the ring bearer? What characteristics make Frodo the best candidate to carry the ring to Mordor?

BookwormAHN I think since he quite literally inherited the burden of the ring and that is what made him the ring bearer. But his courage, determination and to some extent his innocence gave him a slight edge over the others to take it. 4y

JazzFeathers I second @BookwormAHN l also think that being a Hobbit factored into it. As we know, Men are very suscettible to power and Elves are easily tempted. But hobbits value the little joys of life, things that other people may consider silly and small. They are totally immune (as we'll see in the end), but they are different. And Frodo is a different hobbit, he knows the word outside, he's not scared of 'the others'. 4y

Friendfluence: The Surprising Ways Friends Make Us Who We Are | Carlin Flora

Schnoebs @Crimson613 you can get a book on anything, that‘s why I love nonfiction so much lol. My go tos are usually science or memories but I always end up reaching for something different every other month or so 4y

coffees @Schnoebs Niiiice! I wish I was more into science! But it's hard to understand, altho I think psychology and brain stuff is cool. I guess I'm more into history and just random things I'm into at the time xD but it's hard to really keep my interest T_T 4y
