An Unkindness of Ghosts | Rivers Solomon

#Booked2019 #Autumn #PersonOfColorMCParanormal

*The prompt is a busy one, right? Trying to cover PoC MC issues plus paranormal issues is already a lot. This book wants to stretch the circumambience even further to include mental illness, societal issues/differences (read politics), patriarchy, caste systems, and religion, all within an overarching tent of slave narrative and science fiction (again, a lot). Solomon does all of this aboard ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) a generational ship in which all passengers are confined for at least a hundred years. I think part of my problem was in listening to the audiobook—I feel that this book might be better read than heard. There is a LOT packed into this book (also including gender issues, which I forgot to list). I have to say that I believe this is an important book. It‘s just that it tries to do so much that it runs the risk of not sticking the landing. 4y
squirrelbrain Great review! 👍 4y
gradcat @squirrelbrain Thank you very much, Helen! I appreciate the compliment + I appreciate hearing from you! Miss you, woman!! 😘 4y

gradcat @squirrelbrain It is, and I hope the same for you & yours! ♥️♥️♥️ 4y
Crazeedi You're getting some reading done! Good for you!!👏😍 4y
Cinfhen Ha, YES!!! VERY BUSY prompt!!!! Great pick and wonderful review 😃 4y
gradcat @Crazeedi Yes, finally. It helps that one is on tape; I was able to listen to that one when my eyes would get bleary. I‘m really pumping it to the finish line...going to give it my all here at the end! 4y
gradcat @Cinfhen I sure hope that wasn‘t offensive! I just thought the book really matched that prompt, both on the literal level and on the content level. I think that might be the most interesting prompt that I‘ve ever seen! ♥️ 4y

Unpopular opinion. This started out quite intriguing and then fell flat for me. Jane is badass, no doubt, and the narrator was awesome. I think it may have been just me wanting more zombie 😂 Will still read the sequel though.

@Mdargusch passed this one on to me after she read it a few years ago. I absolutely loved it—a fictionalized account of a murder wherein the dead bride supposedly comes to her mother after death and tells her that she was murdered by her new husband?! Yes please! This really happened (the circumstances—not the actual haunting. Unless it really did. 😆 #skeptic) Google Greenbrier Ghost. #soaringscores #didimakethemostoflovingyou

Hollie Yes! I talk about this in class and the students are always like wtf when I tell them they allowed testimony from the murder victims ghost into the courtroom 😂 5y
Reviewsbylola I‘m using this one for #personofcolorMCparanormal. Half of the book is told from the perspective of one of the attorneys that defended the ghost‘s husband, and the attorney was a POC. @cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage 5y
emtobiasz They told this story on an episode I just watched of the show Drunk History! 📺 5y

Cinfhen Cool!!!! I probably stacked this based on a review from @Mdargusch xx 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I am just starting this one! Glad you liked it! 5y
LeahBergen Oh, this sounds good! 5y
Mdargusch This was an interesting book! And I had forgotten all about it! Perfect read for October! 5y
CrowCAH Wow that‘s quite the tale! Ghosts accusing the living of murder! 5y

Pickpick

This was supposed to be a #screamathon book, but despite being shelved as horror on GR, it‘s definitely not a scary book. It is, however, really well-written urban fantasy/paranormal that I enjoyed a lot. Very original and thought-provoking. I loved Jessica, but the other main character was hard to like most of the time. I will continue the series.

This was also my #PersonOfColorMCParanormal for #Booked2019. 🙌🏻

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Butterfinger Love the cover. 5y
Cinfhen Well that worked out perfectly 🧡 5y
SarahSaysRead Love this book, the second one is good too. 5y

Kindred | Octavia E. Butler

Pickpick

Generally I don‘t do very well with science fiction novels but Octavia Butler was exceptional. (I loved Parable of the Sower, need to get to the 2nd book). Kindred is remarkably haunting, intense, and powerful. A compelling read that combines thought provoking questions effortlessly.

Reviewsbylola I enjoyed this one. I haven‘t seen this cover before—love it! 5y
batsy On my TBR! Sounds really good. 5y
Ruthiella Butler‘s sci-fi is different from other writers. She keeps it at a very human and relatable level...no space wars or opera necessary. 😀 I admire her guts too...she goes places where others fear to tread and exposes our complicated natures. (edited) 5y
erzascarletbookgasm She is admirable @Ruthiella , and the keeping things ‘at a very human and relatable level‘ is exactly what draws me to her stories. You hit the nail on the head on why her books are ‘readable‘ to me! 😊 5y
erzascarletbookgasm This pretty edition is a UK paperback published in 2018 by Headline. Joining the #coverlove 😊 @Kalalalatja @DrexEdit @Tamra @Reviewsbylola 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Hope you‘ll get around to read it, @batsy 👍 5y
kspenmoll I love your cover!!‘ 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage This is a perfect pick for this prompt. The second Parable book is darker than the first, but so worth the time. 👊🏻♥️📚 5y

An Orchestra of Minorities | Chigozie Obioma
post image
Pickpick

It‘s an extraordinary journey this man goes on , his chi - his gaurdian spirit. ..narrates the story & refers to the farmer ( MC ) as his host , there is no human narrator.
I felt the story very strongly.
“ We imprison them & kill them when we want because they are not so powerful “
An orchestra of minorities - they can only wail & cry. Now , he did go on a bit towards the end , but still, it was 5 ⭐️ #Booked2019 #Personofcolormcparanormal

Cinfhen I agree, it got a tiny bit off the rails but by then I was already completely won over ♥️ 5y
Cathythoughts @Cinfhen me too - I was completely won over. Great story telling. He just has SO much to say ... a lot of words. But brilliant 5y
Tamra If you liked it I‘ll check it out! 5y

Simona I‘m a little over halfway and I‘m not as excited as you are 😕 5y
Cathythoughts @Simona oh dear 😬... the first half was my favorite. Maybe the second half will be yours 🤞🏻 5y
Cinfhen I‘m bummed you‘re not loving this book @Simona 😩😩😩 5y
Simona @Cinfhen I‘m not disappointed by the story per se, it‘s only that I have problems with the narrator .... 5y
Cinfhen The chi?? Or are you listening to an #audio? @Simona 5y
Simona @Cinfhen No, I have ebook, and yes, Chi was my problem. I finished the book and I really don‘t like his almost pleading voice ... 5y
Cinfhen Interesting @Simona I thought the Chi was the best part of the story 🤓 5y
Simona @Cinfhen I like it as an idea - how powerful narration tool this is .... 5y

My rating is merely a consequence of the fact - that I don‘t like sci-fi. 🤷‍♀️

#Booked2019 #PersonOfColorMcParanormal

alisiakae This is one of my choices for that prompt...but I do like sci-fi and fantasy! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Good job, Simona! I‘m hoping to read all three Binti stories this year. I‘ll need a reread on the first to slide into the rest of her trilogy. (Yeah, I like SFF also, which helps.) 5y
Cinfhen I‘m with you @Simona and I don‘t care for GN / comics either 🙄 5y

Simona @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage As I said - it‘s me, not the book. Absolutely nothing is wrong with the story, but my interest is lost whenever intergalactic travels starts.... but occasionally I do like soft fantasy. 5y
Simona @Cinfhen Under the influence of Litsy, I read few graphic novels and I must admit that I was not disappointed 😘 5y
Cinfhen I‘m reading one now which is good but I just don‘t enjoy the medium that much. Another case of #ItsMeNotYou 5y
