I started this today. While the writing was captivating and the story is terrifyingly real for dystopian science fiction, something happens on page 44 which I‘ll put in a spoiler comment, and I‘m out. It‘s my line in the sand. The rest of the story was already making me uncomfortable and this was the last straw.

DGRachel A dog is shot and not instantly killed. I get why they shot the dog, but the animal suffers and I cannot cope with that. When added to all the nonchalant comments about rape and murder, it‘s just too much for me to deal with right now. I need happy. 5y
VioletBramble I loved this book but, it‘s definitely not a happy book. It left me thinking about my survival plan if this scenario should actually occur. I looked up how to make bread out of acorns. I worry a lot in the current political climate in the US that these things in the book may come true. It‘s probably best that you don‘t read it right now. 5y
Aimeesue @VioletBramble The acorn bread! I read this a decade ago, at least, and I remember that too, vividly. And I'm planting my yard with edible perennials; I joke that it's in case of zombie apocalypse, but political unrest is a disturbingly possible scenario too. Pro tip: you can eat hostas! 😁 5y
VioletBramble @Aimeesue Hostas? If the apocalypse occurs when I‘m at my mother‘s house we‘ll be set for a while - she has her whole backyard ringed with hostas. 5y
