Reading update 1 for the #sharreadreadathon:

I‘m glad I started this one today. It‘s humorous, which I need given the mostly bleak topics I‘m otherwise reading. Also, I am sort of doing a #buddylisten with my daughter @arielmonsen She‘s busy at college and I go back to work tomorrow. It‘ll be a long read.

I‘ve not listened much yet. Aunt Betsy is insisting that David Copperfield is going to be born a girl. #chunksterchallenge2022

TheAromaofBooks I have been reading a chapter a day of this one since January 1 and am almost done. I'm enjoying it so much!!! Although I honestly had to look up some spoilers to make sure certain people get what's coming to them! 😂 2y
Amiable What's the page count on this one? Goodreads has it at 882 pages but there are so many editions. 2y
Texreader @Amiable I do not know since I‘m listening to the audiobook. My kindle and iBook versions don‘t give IRL page numbers. My daughter has a hard copy so I‘m checking with her. Update: daughter‘s copy has 765 pages. (edited) 2y

Texreader @TheAromaofBooks Ha!! That‘s such a great idea! Dickens is a hoot. I love him. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Amiable - My edition has 776 pages but the writing is sooo tiny!!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I'm in one of the grand finale chapters right now and can't deal with it. I freaking love Mr. Macawber. And was there ever a name creepier than Uriah Heep!? 2y
Amiable @TheAromaofBooks That‘s why I usually look at the GR editions and try to calculate an average that makes more sense! 😀 2y

Life is hectic and there‘s been nonstop Jewish Holidays with lots of entertaining and peopling but I still managed to finish 5 books this week. My favorite was the Shapiro memoir but I REALLY ENJOYED the Coffee Trader by David Liss, which was gifted to me by @BarbaraBB 🧡Three Girls was also a great read, very powerful and highly recommended. I didn‘t care for my #BuddyListen #Knife but I enjoyed discussing the memoir with @Megabooks 💜

TrishB A good mixed week 👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen Yes, a read a bit of everything @TrishB #MoodReader 3y
Megabooks Always love talking books (or anything else) with you!! 😘😘 (edited) 3y

How‘d I get up to 729 titles? Sales like this! (Note: I have listened to most of them! #audiophile)

I do love my #audiobooks!

#AudibleSale

Traci1 Wow, that's impressive. I'm at 151. 3y
Megabooks @Traci1 thanks! I think I collect audiobooks because I have so little space for print. 3y
Cinfhen Oh wow!!!! You really added some awesome titles! I LOVED this one - it brought me to tears SO MANY TIMES 3y

Megabooks @Cinfhen that has been on my wishlist for years, so I was happy to see it on sale. I‘m reading the North Korea one now. Interesting perspective as it was written by a former Soviet exchange student. He‘s doing a lot of comparison between life under Stalin and under Kim. It‘s a refreshing change from those who compare NK to western countries. I think comparing Kim Jong-un to Trump is popular but lazy. ⬇️ 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen the authoritarianism isn‘t even comparable and one is a dynastic repressive monarch and the other is a legally elected populist. I don‘t like either but I feel the Kim Il-sung/Stalin comparison is a lot more interesting and actually comparable, although the author posits that Stalin is less repressive than Kim. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Let‘s #BuddyListen this one since we both just picked it up… 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes! 👍🏻👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen How about this Sunday?? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen sorry. Went to sleep before I saw this. Yes, Sunday works! 3y

Amanda Montell, aka DaManda, is a self certified #wordNinja. And she‘s absolutely delightful. She brings knowledge, humor and insight into our everyday lexicon. I LOVED this book. Who knew words could be so entertaining and empowering!?!This was GREAT🙌🏻 Loved listening to the author read her work. I think this would make an AWESOME bookclub choice. Lots to talk about 😜#NFchallenge21 #AboutLanguage #Booked21 #JewishAuthorMC #Hoopla

squirrelbrain @julesG and I had our own little book club meeting (on Zoom) when we read this last year. We both listened to it and Jules bought herself a hard copy straight away. I fully intend to get myself a copy too, as I think you would get different things out of a print copy. 3y
Cinfhen I agree @squirrelbrain How fun that you and @julesG had a zoom chat !!! Great idea 3y

julesG @squirrelbrain I've picked the book up several times since our #BuddyListen. Definitely worth getting a print copy. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa This one has been on my to read list for awhile... I was just thinking about nominating it the next time around with #SheSaid ... sounds like that would be a good idea. 3y
Megabooks Glad you loved it and I loooove that flower!! 💜💜💜 3y

Only read the introduction and I‘m LOVING this so far Helen! 😘👍 @squirrelbrain
How can I not love a book with these chapter titles!?

MicheleinPhilly I used to get so angry when I heard or read the word “dyke” and now I just laugh. I would never use it myself and understand if people are upset by it but really it just makes me wonder how pathetic the person uttering it is. 3y
squirrelbrain I hope you continue to love it! I listened to it (narrated by the author) and you could hear the smirk in her voice sometimes. I really want to buy a hard copy to refer back to and, in fact, @julesG did get a copy straight after our #buddylisten. 3y
KarenUK @MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain It‘s so fascinating but I‘m also totally loving her nerdiness and humor.... I love how she‘s talking about how language changes and evolves.... really fun. (edited) 3y

I‘ve just taken out an audiobook subscription - determined to shape a space to enjoy some audio. I‘m a huge podcast fan - which leave little too for audio books. But I‘ve read so many great reviews to audio versions so I‘m going to make it work! ✔️

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/aug/02/a-word-in-your-ear-why-the-rise-of...

squirrelbrain I‘ve only just got into audiobooks, and I‘ve just signed up to Audible and Scribd. Might not have as much time when I get back to work but, like you, I‘m determined to fit some time in somewhere. 4y
Mitch @squirrelbrain me too. I joined mainly because of this book - which has had such rave reviews for the audio - 4y
wanderinglynn @Mitch @squirrelbrain I only embraced audiobooks in the last year, but I now love them and a huge fan. I like them because you can listen while doing other things, like cooking or crafts. I also listen to them on my commute. 4y

squirrelbrain This is a recent favourite of mine, @Mitch, @wanderinglynn - @julesG and I did a #buddylisten and both loved it! It‘s on Scribd. 4y
wanderinglynn @squirrelbrain I will check it out! 👍🏻 4y
jenniferw88 I loved this one on Audible - the only thing that would have made it better is the addition of Mark Gatiss as the spooky voice! 4y
Chelsea.Poole I'm a huge Audiobooker! 😍 I have to drop in to say, please please try something besides Audible. I work at a public library so I'm most familiar with the FREE and wonderful apps Libby and hoopla. But I hear there's also a great way to purchase audiobooks from bookstores. I believe it's Libro.fm I've seen discussed here...? Audible is harmful--they have enough $ to create content that they do not make available anywhere else. A Monopoly 4y
rockpools @Chelsea.Poole I think @BookishClaire posted an article about this the other day. Membership of libro.fm is only available to US/Canada, I think, but you can buy individual titles and (it looks like) access their sales prices if you live elsewhere- will definitely try them sometime. 4y
Mitch @jenniferw88 love her Norfolk series 👍🏼 4y
Mitch @squirrelbrain 👍🏼 4y
Mitch @Chelsea.Poole @rockpools I got in touch with libro.fm a few weeks ago and they sorted me out with a membership using a gift card as you can‘t take out a normal subscription if you‘re not in the US. 👍🏼 4y
rockpools @Mitch Oh that‘s really neat! 4y
julesG @Chelsea.Poole I love what you just wrote. I'm a huge audiobook fan. I'd really like to use Libby and Hoopla, but my local library doesn't support it. (I'm in Germany, I should add.) I'd also love to use other stores than audible, but either audiobooks are horribly expensive, or my German IP doesn't allow me to even open an account. 4y
julesG @Mitch oh wow! That's a good idea. Thanks for the info. 4y
Kappadeemom I can‘t keep up with podcasts much less as audiobooks to the list 😀 4y
JamieArc I have to admit that I used to be a huge podcast listener but since really getting into audiobooks 3-4 years ago I don‘t listen to podcasts too much any more. I don‘t think it helped that a lot of my fave podcasts started talking about Trump all the time, so it made it easy to do audiobooks instead. I miss podcasts sometimes, but love audiobooks too much to give that time to podcasts. 4y
Mitch @Kappadeemom I know the feeling. I‘ve tried about 3 times this year to get into audiobooks and failed miserably every time !🤣 4y
Mitch @julesG yeah - it allows you to buy a gift subscription card with a bank account outside of the US. But sadly doesn‘t allow you to purchase a subscription the normal way. But it was a good work around. 4y
Mitch @JamieArc I have a feeling life only makes room for one - podcasts or audiobooks! 4y
BethM I love audiobooks! Like @wanderinglynn I use them for commute, house work, etc. I‘ve done Libby, audible, audiobooks.com, and scribd. Scribd is by far my favorite bc you aren‘t buying the titles and can have more than one a month. 4y
Sargar114 Thanks for sharing. I‘m just about to dabble in audiobooks and am kinda excited about it! 4y
MsMelissa I have tried and tried to get into audiobooks, but I simply can‘t listen to them unless it‘s the only thing I‘m doing (they were my savior several years back when I had debilitating vertigo for weeks and was bedridden). I‘ve tried when crafting, when walking, when puttering around my house, but I get distracted too easily and miss too much. Oh well. 4y
Chelsea.Poole @julesG I knew these options weren't available everywhere but I was hoping to spread the word for those who are able to access it. I'm hoping these options will be available to you and everywhere sometime soon!! Thank you! 😊 4y

Thanks to @ShyBookOwl for putting this on my radar!

Montell looks at language from a feminist perspective, with chapters including swearing, catcalling, insults, public speaking and what to call your genitalia.

It was laugh-out-loud funny but I also learnt a LOT. This was a #buddylisten with @julesG and I‘m glad it was audio as I loved the author‘s voice but I also want to get a hard-copy to refer back to.

#jennyis30 #feminism

ShyBookOwl So glad you liked it 😊 I agree with everything in your review! The audio was ideal but, like you, I want that hard copy! It's been a while since I had that much fun while learning. 4y

This audiobook version, narrated by the author, was good. I took some notes and might even buy a paper version of it.

My favourite chapter was the one about swearing - no surprises there.

squirrelbrain I finished it last night and was also thinking of buying a hard copy! Love the stool....! ❤️ 4y

Lreads The stool looks so fresh and pretty! 😍👏 4y
julesG @VeganCleopatra I crocheted a square from cotton twine and then fastened it to the side bars. 4y
Freespirit Wow that is fantastic! 4y
VeganCleopatra Ah I see. I wasn't sure if it was something like that or macrame. 4y
julesG @VeganCleopatra I was thinking of using macrame, but was too lazy to look up which knots would make most sense. 😉 4y

squirrelbrain Oh no, I didn‘t take notes! (I‘ve been listening while either walking or driving...neither conducive to note-taking!). You can be in charge on Thursday then! 🤣 4y
julesG @squirrelbrain I didn't take minutes, only jotted down a few things here and there. 4y
