#documentaries

Right now I'm watching a docu about things that are no longer in use, like tube TVs, telegrams, or telephone booths - mobile phones have made them nearly extinct.

#TodayILearned that there is a federal law regulating the distribution of telephone booths here in Germany. No citizen should live further than 2.3 kilometres from the next telephone booth. 😵

PS: the tagged book sounds interesting

TrishB Love trivia facts like that 😁 4y
Clwojick Our phone booths are now 3x the cost they were when I was a child. 4y
Hooked_on_books I spotted a pay phone in the wild the other day. It was so shocking to see it! 4y
Oryx In some villages here, they turned the old red phone boxes into defibrillator stations. 4y

I love #documentaries.
So far I've watched several about the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, including documentaries about the development of both German states until 1989 and what's happened in the 30 years since the Wall fell.
Several docs about medieval Scottish history, especially the clans fighting for the Scottish throne.
The Tudor dynasty, computers, gold, secrets of the Catholic Church,...

Deifio What documentaries did you watch on recent German history? Anything you can recommend? 4y
julesG @Deifio ZDF has a bunch of stuff. I just checked their "Mediathek". I really liked the ones about what has changed within the last 30 years. Think they called it "Bilanz Deutschland" or so. 4y
Velvetfur Documentaries are fantastic, I agree! I'd be interested to find out more about Germany after the Wall, I mean more detail.... I can't believe I haven't been to Germany, just passed through! It's on my list 😊 4y

julesG @Velvetfur Wish I could recommend any English speaking documentaries, I've only seen German ones. 4y
Velvetfur @julesG I'm sure there will be some, when I get around to looking for one, or there will be books about it too! But thanks for bringing it to my attention, putting it on my radar 😊👍 4y
Clwojick I hardly ever watch tv, but when I do, it‘s often documentary‘s. I‘m more of a true crime nut, but I enjoy history docs too. 4y
GingerAntics Secrets of the Catholic Church? That had to be a trip! 4y
julesG @GingerAntics was very basic stuff, like pope Joan (yes or no, we don't know for sure), and probably only the tip of the iceberg. 4y
GingerAntics Pope Joan? Oh, I think I‘ve heard about this theory. Yeah, I‘ve watched a handful of documentaries on the Catholic Church and I still feel like I‘m at the tip of the iceberg. I also heard a theory that somewhere in the archives they have the arch of the covenant. When asked, the press guy for the church said “the Catholic Church has no more secrets than any other modern country.” Um, dude that‘s A LOT of secrets than. 4y
ValerieAndBooks @julesG @GingerAntics ever since I read the (tagged) historical fiction about her, I like to think there really was a Pope Joan! 4y
julesG @ValerieAndBooks Any woman using her brain and not being intimidated by men could have fooled herself into that job in the Middle Ages. Sadly there weren't that many. But, like you, I think it might have been possible. 4y
