So good! Children‘s book to show Iliana as she grows up!

Pickpick

After an auto mechanic shop opens in the main character's backyard, he embarks on an increasingly desperate series of attempts to get some peace from many varieties of noise in modernizing 1950s South American society. It's not as slapstick as it sounds - more like a very long short story with weird character quirks. You feel bad for the guy, but he also reveals himself to be a bit of an oddball, so that adds another dimension to the mix.

sarahbarnes This sounds really interesting. It gives me Bolaño vibes. 2mo
Billypar @sarahbarnes Yeah, I've only read one novel a piece for both authors, but I could see Bolaño being influenced by diBenedetto. Funny too because when I was choosing what to read next, it was between this book and Bolaño's 'The Amulet'. 2mo
sarahbarnes Good to know! I had a big Bolaño phase a few years back. There are still some books of his I want to get to. Meanwhile I‘m stacking this one. 2mo
Billypar @sarahbarnes I really wish I didn't fear long novels and could commit to 2666! 2mo

#12DaysofChristmas #May

I fell asleep so this one is a day late.

This is around the time my resolve to review books consistently fell apart as usual.

I love this one. Ana Castillo‘s writing is beautiful and poetic. Carmen, despite having polio as a child, is a renowned flamenco dancer in Chicago. I love reading about Carmen, her passionate love affairs, her relationship with her family, and her strength.

Bookzombie These two books, tagged, were strong contenders for May also. 4mo
Andrew65 Yes, the same month my records fell apart, have a had to spend a couple of intense days getting them back on track this week. 4mo

Bookzombie @Reggie 🙂 You recommended it to me. 4mo
Bookzombie @Andrew65 That sounds like no fun. Sometimes I don‘t track all month and catching up for one month alone is a pain. 4mo
Andrew65 @Bookzombie Had 6 1/2 months to catch up on 🫣😱 But now back on track! I must not let it happen again 😂 4mo
Bookzombie @Andrew65 That is a lot, lol. 4mo

Mehso-so

This was a silly dark comedy about a kill-happy queen trying to stop a rebellion and her princess-cursed-as-a-raven sidekick. It was utter ridiculousness. The story was outrageous. There were some cool voice cameos like Tim Gunn and Meryl Streep but honestly the audio production wasn't that great, the volume was chaotic. Overall this was a good palette cleanser between serious books but nothing special.

The only thing the three women had in common was their husband.
And, as of this morning, that they're each accused of his murder.
Blake Nelson moved onto a hidden stretch of land - a raw paradise in the wilds of Utah - where he lived with his three wives:
Rachel, the chief wife, obedient and doting to a fault.

EadieB Tina, the other wife, who is everything Rachel isn't.
And Emily, the youngest wife, who knows little else.
When their husband is found dead under the desert sun, the questions pile up.
But none of the widows know who would want to kill a good man like Blake.
Or, at least, that's what they'll tell the police...
This is a book about 3 Mormon wives who marry one man named Blake. It was not what I thought the book was about.

EadieB I thought it was a book written by Kate Quinn but I started it anyway and got about 1/2 through it and decided I couldn't read anymore so I DNF'd it. But I did look in the back of the book to find out who the killer was. So I ended up with 3 stars as that's what it meant to me. Glad I'm done with that book as I couldn't read anymore. 6mo

1 ⭐️
Frequent violent episodes, mentions of torture, and child abuse are plot points perhaps implemented to raise the stakes of this novel; however, by using inconsistent narrative voice, breaking the fourth wall only when convenient, and introducing characters only to remove them when no longer needed for plot, the reader is left wondering if this book was written by AI. Basically, I hated this.

A suspenseful short story. Maggie Cabot is a devoted wife to her husband of twenty years. She is navigating her daily life as an empty nester since their daughter recently went off to college when the police show up on her doorstep. Her husband, James, is wanted for questioning when the body of his long ago girlfriend is discovered. 🏕️
