Pickpick

Whew, this was great! I really enjoyed this book. It scratched the itch created by my reading of Du Maurier‘s Rebecca earlier this year. The story got off to a bit of a slow start, but the payoff was so worth it. Waters‘ main characters have real depth and her settings are memorable and well-drawn. The best part was the story, though. I genuinely didn‘t know what to expect.

Ruthiella I loved this book!😀 The payoff of reading the same story twice is marvelous! 5y
saresmoore @LeahBergen I‘ve tried a few of her others and they didn‘t click, but now that I know what she‘s about, I want to read everything! 5y
scowler1 She's brilliant, I started with A Little Stranger and then had to read everything. 5y
batsy @LeahBergen 😂 I, too, am glad you enjoyed it, Sara! It's one of my favourites. 5y
saresmoore @scowler1 I‘ll read A Little Stranger next! 5y

Moray_Reads I love the Paying Guests 5y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I listened to the first bit of The Paying Guests via audio, but I think the narrator just rubbed me the wrong way. I don‘t think I‘m very good at audiobooking. 5y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore oh my goodness. But it's Juliet Stevenson the BEST of narrators! 5y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I must be broken! 😂 5y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore you are definitely broken. I'd listen to anything she narrated 5y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I‘ve been wondering if it isn‘t my headphones that makes audio so frustrating. I‘ve just ordered new ones because the Apple bud thingies give me a massive headache. It could also very well be my distracting children. (It‘s probably the children.) Anyhoo, I won‘t give up because it would be very nice to listen to Juliet build claustrophobic tension while I crochet and ignore my children. 😄 5y
kgriffith My favorite SW. 5y
saresmoore @kgriffith I‘m surprised by how different The Paying Guests is from Fingersmith. She‘s so talented! 5y
kgriffith @saresmoore yes, very! Her Victorian “trilogy” is quite different from her later works in general, I would say. At any rate, I‘ll read her novels even when I don‘t particularly enjoy them) looking at you, Night Watch) because her writing is just so exquisitely GOOD. 5y
