“I‘m exhausted from the burden of representing almost two billion people.”
Zara‘s family has waited years for their visa process to be finalized but some terrible things prevent that.
While this book deals with heavy subject matters like the very flawed immigration system here and the racism, I felt the book lacked Zara‘s voice as a character. I felt like I was being told rather than taken along in the story. Loved Zara‘s relationship with her parents. Wished we got more than the surface relationship with her friends.
I am glad someone is telling this story: examining the effects that the prolonged uncertainty of a lengthy legal immigration process has on families. I loved Zara‘s indomitable spirit. While I loved Khan‘s first book, I feel like this book trusted its readers less and sometimes reverted to telling where letting readers see would have made a more powerful statement.
Yay for release day deliveries! Can‘t wait to dive into these books.

A book I found in our local Little Free Library. I gave a book and took a book garnered from someone‘s library In a different part of the state. Sure hope they paid for it or bought it from the library book sale as it isn‘t marked as a book sale book... 🤔 #librarybook #littlefreelibrary43393
Great story with a very frustrating outcome.
Eh, I'm bailing. First half was cute but it fell off for me. Maybe I took too long of a break between reading sessions and couldn't hop back on. Maybe all the meaningless conversations and banter got the best of me. Maybe there were too many back stories. Maybe I'm just not in the mood. Whatever it is, I'm moving on. ✌️🤷🏼♀️
Oof. Gut punch. Isn't that the truth?
Really enjoying this book that's set in the aftermath of a mass shooting. What's life like for the victims' families, the survivors, and those lucky enough to not be directly affected?
This book was so good. I love how the story took place months after the shooting- and that the shooting wasn‘t the focus but the aftermath and how to people are dealing months after once it seems like a lot of the chaos has calm, it was a unique take.
