Bookwomble Oh, I listened to Hugh Bonneville narrating this one earlier in the week. I like this story 😊 21h
Bookwomble I think Holmes had Cadogan-West down for it initially, to his evident disappointment as he expressed increasing regret that the evidence was stacking against him. Once he had ruled him out, I think Johnson, the senior clerk, was next on his list. His failure to consider that a member of the aristocratic family of Sir James Walter was the culprit is an example, I think, of Holmes's class prejudice. 21h
Bookwomble As for the lax security, Imperial arrogance and an assumption of security and inviolability? Who, actually, would have the effrontery to trespass into the sacred groves of Empire? I guess today we might call it privilege 21h
See All 8 Comments
Librarybelle Completely agree on both counts, @Bookwomble . It‘s also good to see that Holmes is actually human and does think incorrectly from time to time. 6h
dabbe @Bookwomble True, Johnson would be the logical choice. Still, there is nothing in particular to make one suspect Johnson. He's only in one scene, and says and does nothing to make anyone suspicious of him. Perhaps Doyle should have made him more suspicious to the reader--at least this one! 🤩 4h
dabbe @Librarybelle @Bookwomble And that he does have the humility to admit it, even calling himself an “ass!“ 🤣 4h
dabbe @Librarybelle @Bookwomble I also am left wondering this: why did Oberstein leave copies of the agony ads lying about? He seemed to have destroyed all of the other evidence. Did he forget about them? Was he planning to use them and come back to blackmail Valentine later? It seems unbelievably sloppy (and lucky for Holmes). 4h

Librarybelle I thought Mycroft‘s comparison of himself to Holmes was interesting—sure, he could solve the crime too, but Holmes is better at ferreting out the truth by visiting locations and talking to people. Imagine those dinner time conversations growing up! 😂 6h
dabbe @Librarybelle Mycroft may be superior in intellect (even Sherlock has stated this), but Sherlock has grit and mettle to add to his capability in solving a case. Mycroft might be the British government at times, But Holmes is the detective I would want on my case. 🤣 4h

Bookwomble Given his previous experiences in such cases, Holmes might have had more regard for the family members of the principles that first came to his notice. The laxity of security seems curious, until you remember the relatively recent instances of heads of state communicating on insecure channels or storing government secrets in the toilets of their holiday homes 🗃️🚽 🧐 20h
TheLudicReader I tell my students 3 is a magic number in writing all the time. 🤓 16h
dabbe @TheLudicReader Did you ever watch Schoolhouse Rock? For multiplication, they had a song entitled (wait for it) “3 is a Magic Number.“ It has stuck in my head since I was a kid. If you want to watch it, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8lRKCw2_Pk

#nerdsunite 🤓
10h
Librarybelle Yes, @Bookwomble —thinking of security and then the current era of “security” of state secrets. Also, the threats from the East are still threats today. 6h
dabbe @Librarybelle @Bookwombile Interesting to also note that in every one of these so-called espionages, all of the criminals were family members! And in all three stories, it was only blind luck that kept these documents from being leaked or getting into the wrong hands. 4h

Bookwomble I like this story, despite Doyle's typical slapdash approach to certain details. As a storyteller, he's more concerned with atmosphere than accuracy, and what would we have to talk about were it otherwise? 😁 20h
Daisey I enjoyed this one! 8h
Librarybelle This was a good one! 6h
dabbe @Bookwomble Oh, I think atmosphere is so much fun to talk about! In this one, what about the dense fog? Its yellow oils dripping on the window! And would we even have this mystery without it? To me, it was the main character! 🤩 4h
dabbe @Daisey @Librarybelle Yay! I did, too! The body on the train scene reminded me of the film noir from the 40s, DOUBLE INDEMNITY. If you like those kind of movies, you should see it. It's INCREDIBLE! 🤩 4h

The woman in white | Wilkie COLLINS
post image
Pickpick

#hashtagbrigade @BarkingMadRead
A heart-pounding sensational read, blending elements of mystery, romance, and psychological drama. Told in an epistolary style, Collins is able to explore multiple perspectives from a myriad of characters to piece together the mystery of the woman in white. The novel's greatest strength lies in its characters, especially Marian, who stands out as a strong, intelligent, and resourceful woman ... ⬇️

BarkingMadRead I love this graphic! 2d
dabbe ... who defies the typical Victorian archetypes of femininity. THE WOMAN IN WHITE also explores issues of identity, gender, and power, reflecting the social anxieties of its time. Collins critiques the legal and social systems that disempower women, using the plight of his female characters to highlight injustices such as the lack of property rights and the vulnerability of women to male manipulation.

Thanks, #hashtagbrigade and @BarkingMadRead!

If you are having issues with the Litsy website like I am (extremely slow, “bad gateway” messages, etc.) please send an email with the issues to litsy@librarything.com so they know that the website is having some serious problems. They did email me this morning and said someone was working on it, but maybe if they see it‘s quite a few of us, they‘ll work even faster. 🤩

Bookwomble I reported problems earlier today to Library Thing, and Tim Spalding has replied, "I've trimmed the notifications back—something I do periodically to speed it up. We had some problems over the weekend, but I wasn't aware of any today.
How is it now?" If you have an LT account, you can leave information about your current website problems on this Talk thread, which it appears Tim is monitoring: https://www.librarything.com/topic/347635#n8791735

#NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle
If you want to completely suspend your disbelief beyond say--a meteor causing a tidal wave similar to one that upturned the SS POSEIDON, then this book is for you! Jewels hidden in a trunk, international espionage, the captain and purser being beaten up, Nancy and Nelda being thrown overboard, sign language, bratty Bobby, carrying a magnifying glass because you just never know ... for frothy fun? Yes. Maybe. Sorta.

Much better score than last week (which was a 14! 😮) Three faves:

2. GASLIGHT: “Are you suggesting that this is a knife I hold in my hand? Have you gone mad, my husband? Or is it I who am mad?“
3. 12 ANGRY MEN: [Juror #8]: “Well, I think testimony that can put a boy into the electric chair *should* be that accurate.“

lil1inblue Most 12-13 year olds I know (and knew) would prefer Midsummer. I personally think that the themes in Merchant would be better understood in high school (I personally didn't read it until college). Although there's several other Shakespeare plays that I would put on the 7th grade list with Midsummer (mostly comedies). 1w

Two of the best dancers of the 20th century. They usually performed death-defying dance moves in tuxedos! If you've never seen them, you should. Here's a link to my favorite dance of theirs from STORMY WEATHER:

It's known as the Stair Dance.

If you love Nick & Nora from THE THIN MAN, you'll adore Tommy & Tuppence. While they are not professional detectives but ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, T&T's banter, resourcefulness, and camaraderie make them endearing, and their dynamic adds a lightheartedness to the story that contrasts with the high-stakes espionage (and at times, contrived) plot. Overall, a riveting and fun mystery read.

Thoughts, Sherlockians?

Librarybelle I still have some confusion over which stories are to take place before Reichenbach Falls…😂 2w
dabbe @Librarybelle IKR? When he writes his later stories, a lot occurred before “The Final Problem“--yet were written decades later! 🤯 2w
CogsOfEncouragement It is interesting that these short stories were first published in monthly periodicals and later bound in books for us. Thank goodness! I think I give a lot of shrugs to these problems in the canon because of that. If they were always published as we have them today I'd be much less forgiving. 2w
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement And to think that there are SH clubs all over the world who love nothing more than to ponder the most minute details of these stories, especially dates and weather. I'm more likely to shrug myself and just move on to the next story.

Thoughts, Sherlockians?

Librarybelle There‘s a bit of responsibility for everyone. Actions have consequences. It‘s a chain reaction. Sarah may not be guilty of murder, but she‘s not exactly innocent either. 2w
dabbe @Librarybelle I didn't like her having “brain fever“. What a cop-out, Doyle! I wanted to see her face some serious consequences besides just losing her mind at the most opportune moment. 2w
CogsOfEncouragement @dabe @ librarybelle

Hmmm, I had not considered this on my own. Heavy.

Sarah is a horrible person. She is described as having a bad temper, meddlesome, and hard to please.

Jim and Mary Browner are the two responsible to keep their marriage vows. In hindsight, maybe Jim would have told Mary about Sarah coming on to him and getting her out of the house that minute. (continued)
2w
See All 10 Comments
CogsOfEncouragement But Jim never saw this sort of vengeance coming his way. Even Sarah might have been surprised how easy it was to manipulate Mary. Did she want her sister dead, or just to make Jim miserable? How did Alec think this was going to work out for himself? Jim certainly takes all the blame for his part in it and Sarah will likely find it difficult to continue in what will certainly be very lonely existence. @dabbe @librarybelle 2w
Librarybelle I don‘t think Sarah thought the situation would become violent…the brain fever thing too was a bit ridiculous, @dabbe . @CogsOfEncouragement 2w
CatLass007 Jim Browner uses the excuse that he was “driven” to drink by the behaviors of Sarah, Mary, and Alex. I know alcoholism is a disease but it wasn‘t considered that when this story was written. But I also believe that personal responsibility is the reason someone picks up their first drink after being sober for a long time. I don‘t believe in blaming others for our own feelings. 2w
dabbe @CatLass007 Or blaming others for our own actions. 2w
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement Communication would have been best, even if Sarah was Mary's sister. I also wonder what on earth Sarah told Mary to have Mary go totally against her husband. Wicked and horrible of Miss Sarah! 2w
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement Sarah having brain-fever wasn't a good enough punishment for her IMHO. But perhaps living with the guilt of what she did (if she's capable) would be enough. I wanted her to suffer more. How nice of me, huh? 🤣 2w
CatLass007 @dabbe Exactly. 2w

Thoughts, Sherlockians?

Librarybelle Perhaps it was the adultery. There is violence in this, but other stories we have read describe bloody scenes or animals/beasts that tear up humans, so I cannot see it being the violence that would stop readers. Good question! 2w
dabbe @Librarybelle I also think the story may have been considered too scandalous was because it was the WOMEN who were the hussies, both Sarah (who came on to a married man) and Mary (who committed adultery while married). If men did it, that was okay, but women! 😱 2w
CogsOfEncouragement So interesting. I'm sure I'm very callous to such things at this point but this read like a cozy or a children's chapter book to me. Sure, there are horrible things done but they are not described in gruesome detail. 2w
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement The ears did receive almost a clinical detachment, didn't they? Very Sherlock-like. 🤩 2w

Lend me an 👂 or 👂👂, Sherlockians. 😱 Thoughts?

Librarybelle That was a bit gruesome! I think I exclaimed “oh my” when we learned the contents of the package. A revenge story, with a bit of violence. 2w
dabbe @Librarybelle Most definitely! 😱 2w
CogsOfEncouragement I enjoyed this one. Was entertained that SH didn't want any credit for it because it was too simple. I was amused at the end when Lestrade acted as though it was yes, very simple - then why did you call in SH! He sent the note that they couldn't get anything to work upon. In my opinion, they would have still been at a lose without SH. Lestrade, just say thank you. 2w
