This question came at a most opportune time as I read it today for the #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2026 led by @TheBookHippie. I'm going to go further than this book, though and state that I find eternal hope in many children's literature books. My ultimate would be THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN by E.B. White, but as I finished this one, I chose it. I'm going to have to read more children's literature this year to survive. 💚

dabbe The countryside is not portrayed as an escape, but as a place where Cheerful‘s instincts finally feel at ease. For young readers, this can be deeply reassuring: wanting something different is part of growing, and moving toward it can happen gradually and safely. For this 60-year-old cynic, it gave me hope and reminded me that there is still a lot of beauty in this world.

I always think of slaves in regards to Jefferson, but not Washington ... until now. 😳

kspenmoll When you tour his plantation they show you the slave quarters. I think his wife brought a lot of slaves to the marriage. 3d

ChaoticMissAdventures Look into Ona Judge. This amazing woman who escaped GW and GW sent government bounty hunters after her. This story has really stuck with me. She was able to evade them the rest of her life. This is a not very good book, but the story itself is worth reading it for the information -

Never Caught: Ona Judge, the Washingtons, and the Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave

TEArificbooks @kspenmoll Washington owned at least 18 enslaved people before they got married and yes she brought at least 84 (the lowest number I have ever seen) to 300 enslaved people into the marriage. as her husband he was in charge of them but they would go to heirs upon her death not him. 3d

My dad was a Little League coach, Matt was a middle school/high school coach ... it's in our blood. But absolutely no baseball without Bazooka! So sugary and juicy and delightful! And the comics! Fab memory! I can't believe I could read them with my naked eyes back then! 🤣⚾️😍 1d

CatLass007 1961, so I‘m a late Boomer. Boomer and proud of it. Mom worked and Daddy helped with the dishes but he didn‘t mess with the cooking. I don‘t think we knew a lot, if anything, about the dangers of processed foods back then but we at a lot of TV dinners growing up. 3d

Ruthiella What I remember as big on the ‘70s was kiwis, yogurt and bran muffins. All foods that existed obviously for centuries but were only “discovered” in my corner of Southern California when I was a child. Honorable mention goes to granola bars. 3d

We do not care that we have suffered with eczema in our ears for 30 years (thanks, Mom). We do not care that we have seen numerous dermatologists and ENTs who have prescribed every topical ointment under the sun--none of which have worked. Enter shoulder surgeon, who prescribed an internal steroid for my shoulder ... and my ears are completely clear for the first time in decades. I can't even describe the relief. Thanks, Dr. Brad.

Tamra @dabbe I had/have very minor eczema on hands and when I‘ve used a topical steroid it was like a magic wand - overnight! But, it isn‘t so bad that I need it prescribed. I hope you can get it often enough to keep yours at bay! 4d

ImperfectCJ If you, for whatever reason, need to switch to a nonsteroid, I use tacrolimus on my eyelid eczema. Dermatologist was very alarmed that I'd been using topical steroids on it as long as I had been. Not sure if it's okay for ears, but worth an ask, if you need it. 4d

ImperfectCJ (And I should add that the tacrolimus works like a miracle, but it itches like the dickens for the first couple of hours after I apply it.) 4d

dabbe @willaful It'll never go away. We just have to live with it. 🤬 I haven't tried the shots yet. If they don't last, I now know the steroidal pills won't last either. So itchin' frustraing! 😘 3d

dabbe @lil1inblue Oh, you poor thing! It absolutely sucks! If you have a mild case, hydrocortisone does help. Keeping the ears moistened (God, I had that word!) helps, too. I usually use bag balm or mineral oil for that. But it seems that internal steroids are the only thing that works to take the bad cases away--for me anyway. 😘 3d

I'm retired and haven't taught middle school since 2005, so most of my favorite YA literature is from the late 1980s-2000s. Yet ... I first read Sherlock when I was 12 years old and have been hooked ever since. Rereading the entire canon with the #NoPlaceLikeHolmes crew and @Cuilin in 2024-25 makes me again say, I am #foreversherlocked, and so would middle grade kids be .. all over again. 🩶🤍🩶

HAMNET was a deeply moving, beautifully written read for me. I loved the lyrical prose and the quiet, intimate way it explores grief, family, and love—especially through Agnes‘s perspective. The pacing is gentle and sometimes slow, but it felt purposeful, allowing the emotion to really settle in. It‘s not a fast read, but it‘s a powerful and haunting one that will stay with me a long time. #lastreadof2025
