What Moves the Dead | T. Kingfisher
post image

My first Kingfisher. I like it so far! Reminds me of Mexican Gothic, but also The Fall of the House of Usher, obviously. 🍄🐇🪱. The cover is INCREDIBLE of course.

BrittanyReads I'd really like to read this but is there a lot of animal harm?? 😬😬 It's a bit of a trigger for me 3d
DimeryRene @BrittanyReads There is definitely some. There‘s a scene where one character hunts a rabbit and later it is dissected to study. 3d
Kimberlone Gorgeous cover! I don‘t know anything about this book but the cover alone makes me want to read it! 3d
DimeryRene @Kimberlone That‘s why I picked it up! 2d
BrittanyReads Thanks!! Good to know! 👍 1d

Amazing story of trans youth. So sweet and my little heart was real happy. Loved all the mythology.

I‘ve listened to a lot of Poe this year. Many of these stories are repeats, but this narrator is my favorite. William Roberts. The tagged book is wrong, since it‘s an illustrated book. 🤡 It was the closest I could find!

I really can‘t tell if I like this one yet. There‘s a lot of emphasis on each woman‘s weight and looks. Like a lot. Doesn‘t add anything to the narrative though.

Meh… I actually quite liked a lot of this, but the ending and being what it was. I wish it was different and I wish more thrillers would just let it actually be ghosts.

leau84x I loved this one...but I read it shortly after “Turn of the Key“ by Ruth Ware and got really frustrated with that ending. This one was infinitely stronger (to me), so I was really happy. That said, I totally understand where you're coming from, and it's totally fair. I really wish there were more legit haunted house stories out there too. 3w

I really liked this until the end. It felt like the author changed her mind about the twist, but then didn‘t go back and rewrite the lead up to make sense with the new character developments.

Lots of drama! I loved it so much! Decadent, colorful, and artistic. 🌺 This book deals so well with grief and love and how those two feelings stay and intertwine in is.

Quickly moved onto the second book in the series. They are short and funny. I wonder what the next fairy tale will be.

DimeryRene @tpixie Bummer!! I‘m on a fairy tale retelling kick, so I‘ll have to look up some others. (: 3d

SamAnne @DimeryRene Certain Dark Things! I enjoyed Mexican Gothic as well. Looking forward to the Hulu adaptation of the latter. Hoping they dial up the camp! 2mo

Amazing, incredible. Probably not if you have a son though. Read a review that said Samson was probably, definitely on the spectrum. That was not in the book at all, just a mom‘s constant struggle connecting to her difficult child. So if that viewpoint will bother you, please consider!

Really liked this one. Sort of slow, but intriguing. I liked the duel narratives sort of circling each other and catching up and missing each other just by a few steps. *Google image

A little too hopeful and happy for me. A fairy tale basically, but for the subject matter I would have liked it to be more realistic. I can see why people love it, especially in this climate of awful news every day. *photo from hike up Mt Helena where I was listening to the audio.

So slice of life 🍉 Chapters are chronological, but not really connected. Just some things that happen in the lives of our main characters.

I do not understand the negative reviews of this. Slow, yes.. not actually a fantasy, yes… repetitive, yes …. However all that is purposeful. I thought it was lovely.

I came to this book for the main hook: a young boy falls into the sea which is currently full of sharks, but instead of being harmed, he is gently delivered back to his family on a boat. After that initial encounter he is seen as housing old Gods within him, he‘s some sort of deity now. This story is more about what that treatment of him by his parents does to his siblings. What do you do when there is a clear favorite child your family?

Chelsea.Poole Nice review! I read this last year and it‘s really stayed with me. 8mo
DimeryRene @Chelsea.Poole I think I will come back to thinking about this book a lot. I have two siblings and a story about sibling relationships always resonates with me! 8mo
