Didn‘t grab me like I‘d hoped. A wishy washy romance, a wishy washy fight for rights, this book didn‘t know whether it was a romance novel or a paranormal novel.

I really liked Daphne as a character, her unrelenting loyalty to her friends is admirable.

Certainly the topic is on point and relatable to the world we live in today - a group of people segregated for things they can‘t help and wouldn‘t change.

A meh read.

I felt it was too detailed in places and went off on a tangent.

Such a unstable and unsure walk of life, mostly based on youth, beauty and allure, and once those you were gone you didn‘t have much going for you. Securing a wealthy man early in life was absolutely imperative.

I felt sad for these women, rich and beautiful but all could fall down in the blink of an eye.

The Midwich Cuckoos | John Wyndham

Pickpick

Such a strange and disturbing story.

In the town of Midwich, a ‘dayout‘ happens where everyone falls unconscious, when they wake, all the women of childbearing age are pregnant.

The Children are strange, they all appear alike, they can communicate telepathically and they appear as one rather than separate entities.

Where did they come from and what do they want?

Creepy, atmospheric, and well written. Another good one from Wyndham.

braddsibbersen Great book. Not a fan of that cover though. My pocket paperback edition has a much pulpier, 1980s horror thing going on which I much prefer 7d

The stories in this book are all so crazy and baffling, totally typical of PKD.

My favourites were The Second Variety and What The Dead Men Say.

What an absolutely mystifying and crazy brain PKD must of had 🧠

I enjoyed this! I really like the movies so it made sense to delve a little deeper reading the books!

I love how much more detail you get in the novels, more insight into the characters, their actions, you can really feel the fear in this book too!

braddsibbersen Read this in grade school because I wasn't allowed to see the movie! Foster is terrific. He's the actual author of the original Star Wars novelization, and his novelization of Disney's The Black Hole almost makes the ending coherent. 1w

Bit disappointed with this for my first read of 2022.

Too many characters, too many timelines, and nothing made any sense til literally the last few chapters.

I liked Kite and Agatha, about the only redeeming features of this confusing and never ending book 😬

Vansa Please read ONly a Monster by Vanessa Len if you're in the mood for some time travel fantasy!! It's gripping, moving and super well-written with memorable characters. Here's my full review!

Some jarring reading, what strength it must take to be a heart surgeon dealing with dying patients including children.
Westabys memoir of his life as a heart surgeon is insightful, and interesting, his sadness at the failing NHS we all know of is relatable, once the best health service in the world, now on its knees.

All I can say is what a remarkable man, I can‘t imagine how strong and calm you must be to operate in such desperate conditions.

Not my favourite by Kawakami.

A interesting insight into Japanese culture and life. Not much really happens, a bunch of awkward and unsociable characters thrown together to run a thrift store, bumbling through life unsure of themselves or each other.

Mental illness or a ghost? This story never really seems to come to a conclusion of either and you are left wondering, I found the storyline quite predictable, feeling like I was one step ahead of the protagonist all the way through.

The ending was terrible, with nothing wrapped up and no questions answered.

The cover art is beautiful, the story was okay but I felt it was unfinished with a very abrupt ending!

Reggie Yikes that cover. 4w

I really liked this story however I felt it went on for a bit too long. There was quite a lot of filler, rather than actual meaningful story.

The multiple POVs mean this story is complex and really well written, I really enjoyed how the characters were entwined together, especially Giles and Zelda‘s feelings towards Elisa.

Overall enjoyable, though strange. Not sure about the fish porn 🤣

A great debut from this author.

Korede is a nurse who is good at her job, she takes no nonsense and is a meticulously clean and good worker.

Her sister Ayoola is beautiful, shallow and a serial killer, she can‘t help herself from killing every man she has a romantic involvement with.

Korede spends her days dealing with her sisters messes, until the day she has to choose between what‘s right and her family.

Fast paced, dark but also funny!

Wow, what a sad story.

A father who will go to the ends of the earth to protect his son in a post-apocalyptic world. You can really feel the soul destroying desperation as he struggles to keep himself and his son alive.

It‘s beautifully written, but heartbreaking.

I loved this.

Keiko has always been a store worker, she lives and breathes her convenience store life and that‘s where she is happiest.

As she struggles with the shackles of society that are imposed on her by her friends and family such as getting a ‘real‘ job or getting married, she realises that she doesn‘t care for that, she is who she is and that‘s that. A convenience store worker.

We could all learn from Keiko.

A classic horror with some serious 80s vibes.

Gave me some fuzzy nostalgia.

Was a little too long though, took a while to get into the swing of things and although I like setting the stage, the vampires didn‘t really appear til half way through.

Still fun to read! 🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♀️

Enjoyable but mediocre end to the trilogy.

Predictable, but enjoyable.

Every time I read something of Ishiguros it stays with me for a while.

A profound and thought provoking story of a robot who can think and feel, and keeps her sickly best friend Josie company whilst hoping for her recovery.

Seeing the world through Klaras eyes is refreshing as she tries to navigate a human world she doesn‘t quite understand.

What a gorgeous story 🖤

Carnivorous and disturbing plants decide to use a freaky event which blinds the world to rise up and cause humanity to revert back to their more primitive ways.

Triffids are creepy and a little weird and nothing is really given away about what they are or how they came to be on earth, our main character Bill somehow manages to survive and find happiness throughout the shitshow of the apocalypse 👍🏼🤣 good job Bill!

Another classic down 🎉

DinoMom Love the mug! 2mo
rwmg I had the distinct impression that the triffids had escaped from some sort of genetic experimentation laboratory a few years before the story and become a fashionable garden plant. 2mo
LostInSpace @rwmg possibly, he briefly touched on what they were but there wasn‘t a solid classification, Wyndham left most of that to the imagination I think! 2mo

I was drawn in by the cover and feel of this book however I felt deflated and disappointed after finishing it.

It promised a much more enthralling story than it delivered. The writing is well done and very atmospheric but the storyline and romance really fell short of my expectations.

This could have been a really intriguing story, with wreckers scavenging off victims of shipwrecks but overall it was very dull and left a lot to be desired.

A very sad and poignant memoir of two people who fell in love whilst prisoners at Auschwitz.

As I have read other memoirs similar to this I did feel the author had softened the cruelty that had happened during this time - but I suppose some readers wouldn‘t necessarily want to be exposed to the true horrors of what went on during those years.

Overall it was a love story, and two people who found hope where there wasn‘t any ❤️
