In August, the next book in my favorite cozy mystery series comes out (Her Royal Spyness is the series name, if you're interested 😉), so I've decided to make it a month of reading mysteries. ❤️ I'm sure I won't be able to get through all of these lovely Flavia de Luce books, but I'll definitely be starting them! What do you plan to read next month?

The very first book I ever bought on Amazon (way back in 1998) was a volume of the Sailor Moon manga because none of the local bookstores carried manga. It was the beginning of an enduring love of both Amazon *and* manga. I must admit though, I dearly miss the days of waking out of Borders once a month with a stack of manga 30 volumes high. Now there's neither Borders nor that many new releases each month. And yet the TBR is still growing. 😂

Sophoclessweetheart I've never read these! 🙈 I read TMI book one but hated book two so never went any further with the universe of Clare. 7y
Rachel_R._Smith @MythicReads I'm not a huge fan of TMI either, actually, though I've read them all. Still, I loved this trilogy. So they might be worth a try for you sometime. ☺ (edited) 7y
ashley_liz @Rachel_R._Smith little late to the party when it comes to Will and Jem... but I just finished the trilogy and to answer your question... I'm a hands down Jem fan. I was team Will for the first book but by the end, I was all for Jem. I just love everything about him. 7y

The Thursday Next series (which I highly recommend!) is a humorous, time-traveling, adventure- mystery-fantasy detailing the exploits of Thursday Next as she works as a Literary Detective, interacting with the inhabitants of her own world as well as those of the literary worlds she protects. Lovers of both witty mysteries and classic novels (specifically fans of Dickens, Bronte, and Shakespeare especially) should definitely check this series out!

Another great YA fantasy series ❤️ I loved Kestrel and Arin, and especially the dynamic between the two of them and Roshar. Once again, I end up liking a book/series for the main characters and falling in love with it for the secondaries. 😆

#icecreamforbooks Day 5: "I scream, You scream, We all scream" - Horror ? My first thought for this topic was to grab a Stephen King book, but I decided to go with an author who is somewhat lesser known. Actually, King has cited Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos as inspiration in some of his works. Another great writer influenced by Lovecraft's work is Peter Clines. If you like sci-fi and horror, I recommend you check out his books "14" and "The Fold"!

The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heileg is my "backup" book right now. I bought the E-book version and have been slowly reading it whenever I'm waiting for appointments, grabbing a quick bite alone, etc. The characters are all likable and the book is easy to get back into after having put it down for a few days!

Do you keep a "backup" book with you on the go?

MCYmermaid Always! The joy of the Kobo app. Right now I have THE HANDMAID'S TALE about 70% reread as my backup book. 7y

Do you prefer deckled edges on your books or stained edges? I like both, actually. Anything that adds a unique touch to a book is nice. But I have a lot more books with deckled edges than with stained pages. (And since it was the topic for today, I just had to go ahead and deckle the edge of that cake pop for the photo so that it matched. 😉)

nicole_in_neverland I've been really into retellings lately so I have to go with those! Cinder is definitely one of my favorites! 7y
Rachel_R._Smith @nicole_in_neverland Yes!! 🙌 Have you read the Splintered series by A.G. Howard? It's an Alice in Wonderland retelling. 7y
nicole_in_neverland I have! Loved it! I just need to read Untamed and I'll have finished that whole series and the extra books! I've been looking for more good retellings to read lately 7y

Rachel_R._Smith @nicole_in_neverland I haven't read it yet, but Beauty and the Clockwork Beast by Nancy Campbell Allen was recommended to me awhile back as another great retelling. If you like steampunk stories, you might want to give it a try! 💕 7y

This book ended up being a mix for me. I loved the story itself and the secondary characters. However, there were a few things that diminished my enjoyment of the book too--one being that the main character just wasn't as likable as the secondaries. Still, there was enough good about the story that I'll definitely get the sequel when it comes out--it just isn't necessarily one I would recommend.

#ya #fantasy

Utopiyll I'm about to get the book myself 😱 what didn't you enjoy about the main character? Having a main character I like is so important to me enjoying the book!! 7y
Rachel_R._Smith It's just my opinion, but my main issue is that Mariko starts out as an intelligent but sheltered and naive person. As the story passes, there are lots of opportunities for her to grow and evolve (if she did she would be an amazing character!), and I kept hoping she would change even a little, but she didn't. Perhaps that part of her character development is coming in the next book though! (edited) 7y
Utopiyll @Rachel_R._Smith Ohh yes, that makes sense!! Hopefully the author is just going with a slow-burn of character development! We will see 🤗 7y

I am a huge fan of A.G. Howard's work, and this self-published gothic romance is no exception. It's a toss up as to whether I liked this one or her Splintered series more. Her writing is descriptive without being overly so, and sensual enough to convey heart-pounding romantic scenes without becoming graphic or explicit in any way. She conveys the gothic atmosphere so well, and ties in a fantastic twist that was the perfect touch for the plot.

cherinium @Rachel_R._Smith LOL. Yes, indeed I do. We usually bring back several cans of the chili whenever we visit and do our best homemade version of 5 ways. Of course, we always have to make a trip for lunch while we're in town. Remarkably, my husband recently found that a local grocer had Skyline for sale. Score! 7y
Rachel_R._Smith @cherinium I have relatives that have moved out of state and whenever we go to visit we have to restock their stash of canned chili. They've recently changed the baker for the oyster crackers served at the restaurants, which caused a bit of a hubbub locally because they didn't taste exactly the same. 😂 Don't mess with our chili! In general, I don't tend toward books from the dystopian genre, but the Matched trilogy by Ally Condie turned out to be a great read. I loved how she wove "Do not go gentle into that goodnight" by Dylan Thomas into the dialogue and theme of the story. I also thought that Cassia's progression from unquestioning acceptance of her world to being an independent thinker who embraces change was refreshingly realistic. Highly recommend!

#bookishthisorthat Day 16: TMI or TID ☀️I liked TMI, but I *loved* TID. I actually first listened to these books in audiobook format, and I think part of what endeared me to Will's character was the fact that Clockwork Prince was narrated by Ed Westwick. Rachel_R._Smith @LaylaFray I read TID first and I'm afraid it ended up biasing me when I finally read TMI. 🙈 Is Lady Midnight and Lord of the Shadows more like TID or TMI? 7y
LaylaFray Same here! I read TID first, and I guess my expectations for TMI were too high? 😂 I feel like Lady Midnight/Lord of Shadows is more like TMI but the writing is a little better! TID is still the best 😊 7y
Rachel_R._Smith @LaylaFray It's hard to compare to the combo of Will/Tess/Jem 😆 7y
LaylaFray It really is! They are the ultimate trio 😂 7y
Merethebookgal TID is on my fairly-immediate TBR. I've only read the first three books in TMI but have been told I should read TID before continuing. 7y
Rachel_R._Smith @Merethebookgal If you've liked TMI so far, you'll love TID. 😊 I don't think the order matters one way or the other particularly though. There are a lot of interesting/fun references between the two series that you probably wouldn't notice if you read TMI first. However, as Layla mentioned, it seems like Clare's writing strengthened over time, so I'm afraid reading TID first might have diminished my enjoyment of TMI. 7y

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for happy endings. There's enough sacrifice and unhappiness in reality, so I prefer books to be a respite from that. At the same time, I don't like it when the happily ever after is wrapped up too nicely and perfectly either. I think that's one reason why I liked the ending for The One--it's a happy one, but there's a tinge of bittersweetness to it.

It's a series of mystery novels set in England in the 1950s where the main sleuth is an eleven-year-old girl with a knack for chemistry.
