This book is really impactful. I remember being told to read this to my class during BHM and wondering if this was appropriate for 4 year olds. Well the next day I got called into my daycare directors office and got in trouble. On my students did realize that she was Black, and her parents said “they weren‘t going to tell her till she was older” Regardless of that specific experience, I think this book is fantastic. This B book is about Ron, a

Ryanne.H Young child who is growing up during in 1959. There is a law that doesn‘t allow African Americans to check out library books and Ron becomes determined to desegregate his library, and achieve his dream of reading at home. This is such an impactful story that I would use it as a RA so discussion can occur after key points. UDL 3.1, 3.2, and 8.1 & ESOL 26, 28, and 29 #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

I used to read this book to my students all the time, and they really could relate to Sophie, which I believe really means they connected with the book. Often times when they would get mad I would mention Sophie and their demeanor would completely change, and they would become a lot more calm. This RF Caldecott Medal book is about a young girl who gets mad and quickly learns that feeling mad is perfectly fine. This book really helps to encourage

Ryanne.H Children to express their feelings in a healthy way. This book could be utilized as a RA in the classroom. Molly Bang herself has a section on her website dedicated to Sophie and has options for teachers to incorporate this book into their classroom. The activities allow students to comprehend their feelings in safe ways. http://www.mollybang.com/Pages/sophie_act.html UDL 3.1, 7.2, and 9.2 & ESOL 3, 4 and 16 #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
LisaMart @Ryanne.H Books that teach students about moods and feelings and healthy ways to express them are so important to incorporate in any classroom. It really helps them to become more self-aware and adjust their own behaviors appropriately. I haven‘t read this book yet, but just from your post I‘m sure I‘d love it. 6y
Cruzdia1 I always love seeing literature depict all emotions, not just positive ones. I think it‘s important for students to see a full range and variety of emotions that they can relate to 6y

This cute little book is a P book that has 21 poems illustrated with sewn fabric collages and other adorable features. This tribute makes readers look within themselves to discover what inspires them. I think this book would help students fall in love with poetry for its simplistic beauty. I would use this for RT and have my students recite a poem to the class and then discuss what we think the poem means. This entire website is dedicated to

I‘ve always had a hard time becoming passionate about NF books, so when Professor shared that she writes NF picture books for children, I knew I had to look them up! This one, Monster Truck Racing is my favorite because it provides everything you need to know about monster truck in an interesting way that is simple enough for teachers. It makes me want to actually go to Monster Jam next! I think this would best utilized as a RA. unfortunately due

Ryanne.H To the nature of the topic, I can imagine boys would be more eager to read it, but I would push for the girls in my class to read it as well. This 5-day unit plan for NF would be great to use for students who are learning about the genres of literature! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/unit-plans/teaching-content/5-day-unit-plan-... UDL 2.1, 2.4, and 3.2 & ESOL 5, 20, and 29. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
LisaMart @Ryanne.H 🤩 Where did you find this?? I want to read some of her non-fiction books!! Boys would definitely love this book, especially those that might not find reading interesting or “cool.” 6y
Ryanne.H She showed it in class I think 2 weeks ago! She has a whole bunch of them. Pretty cool 😊 6y

GraceNeg I love Monster Jam ! You should definitely go. Every January they come to Orlando. I will actually post about this. 😍😍 6y
KaitlynN I want ALL of her books in my classroom! I love that she made them because we can be sure they have all the NF text features that kids need to see and use to become comfortable with NF text. Plus they are so engaging! I loved books about dinosaurs and fish when I was little. Kids used to be pretty mean about me liking “boy books” so I stopped reading them. I think it would be really cool to point out that a Woman is the author! 6y
DrSpalding What a fabulous resource you have selected to go along with my books. Thanks for the kind comments. High interest books that boys and girls alike can enjoy. 6y

This book has touched my heart, and I will never forget it. I remember reading this to a classroom of children a couple of years ago and they were all so impressed with Henry‘s bravery. This B Caldecott Award winning picture book is about a slave that ships himself to freedom inside of a box. Throughout the book you see all the trials that these poor people had to go through, and it would be perfect for BHM. I Scholastic has such great references

Ryanne.H and again, they do a great job of providing appropriate activities to go along with these amazing books. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/henrys-freedom... UDL 3.1, 3.2, and 7.2 & ESOL 26, 28, and 29. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

Little Dog Poems | Kristine O'Connell George

Again, what a cute little cover! Children love dogs, so this illustration would absolutely catch their attention. Little dog poems by Kristine O‘Connell is a NF-P book about a little girls day with a her Little dog. With thirty short poems, students have many choices to choose from and won‘t want to stop. Awarded the Charlotte Zolotow award, Little Dog Poems students will love these haiku style poems and hopefully encourage them to write their

Ryanne.H Own! Because their are over 30 poems in this book I would best utilize this by using PR or SR so students can work together to uncover the beauty of poetry. This teacher guide is actually written by Kristen O‘Connell herself and she encourages teachers who use Little Dog Poems in their classrooms to email her their usage so she can post it on her website. http://kristinegeorge.com/pdfs/Teachers%20Guide%20Fold%20Me%20a%20Poem.pdf UDL principle 7.2 6y
Ryanne.H Could be incorporated for students to share any stories they have about their pets to provide relevance for the children. Because their are 30 poems ESOL 38 could be used so students could read the poems at home with their family. Overall because the poems are haiku format I think students will really appreciate its simplicity and feel encouraged to write their own poems. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
LisaMart @Ryanne.H I love dogs too!! A puppy poem book! Say no more! Need this! Love that the resource is written by the author! A teachers guide makes life so much easier! Plus if she posts it on her website that would be so awesome to share with the students. ❤️ 6y
KaitlynN My friend is getting a dog this weekend and I am currently looking for this book on Amazon! How cute! I think relatable characters and topics make poetry so much more accessible. 6y

First of all, can we talk about how CUTE this cover is? What child wouldn‘t want to read this book? Pierre the Penguin: A true Story by Jean Marzollo is the recipient of the 2010 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award. Pierre the Penguin is a TL-N book that is sure to make kids laugh at the rhyme sequences and adore the realistic illustrations. I would use this book as a RA so the teachers can define the rhyming words so students can see the

Ryanne.H Patterns. This teachers guide is filled with many simple yet entertaining activities for students to do. https://www.btsb.com/libcorner/lp/PierrethePenguin.pdf I especially love the Smallest to Largest activity where students have to arrange the penguins from smallest to largest because that helps them to understand spatial order (1st, 2nd, etc.) Because most children know what a penguin is, UDL 3.1 could be used to start a discussion about 6y
Ryanne.H Characteristics of penguins before the story is read. I would also use 1.1 and display the rhyming patterns on the board if possible. Because this book would be best used as a RA ESOL strategies 14, 20, & 22 would be best used especially 20 which links back to listing rhyming patterns on the board. Overall I think this is such a cute story and you we all should try to incorporate poetry in our classroom! #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordeci Gerstein is a H book that has won the Caldecott Medal. This book is about a French aerialist Philippe Petit who walked between the two twin towers in 1974. Filled with anticipation and wonder, this book is perfect for children that love books that will leave you wondering what will happen next. Because this picture book is a little lengthy and filled with some tier 2 and tier 3 words

Ryanne.H I would use this as a RA or PR so the book can be paused to discuss what happens periodically. This would be perfect for a social studies revolving historical lessons such as 9-11. I like this activity because sometimes it‘s good to give old fashioned activities that really require students to dig deep and think beyond the text. 6y
Ryanne.H https://www.pinterest.com/pin/222506037817128464/?amp_client_id=amp-cmvQAgKZyWpX... UDL 3.1 is perfect for students that might not know about 9/11. A Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle

Mehso-so

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L‘Engle is a John Newberry Medal award winning SF book. All of my posts are always ‘Pick‘ options, but this one is getting a ‘So-So‘ from me. A Wrinkle in time is about a young girl who has to travel to another dimension to find her lost father. The book itself felt a little unorganized and choppy for me, and it was a struggle to get through. I also found Meg to be whiny and complacent so it was hard to connect

Ryanne.H Emotionally to the text. UDL 2.5 could be used to compare and contrast the movie with the book, and UDL 3.2 is perfect for sharing one of the morals of the story: loving yourself for who you are. 6y
Ryanne.H ESOL strategy 45 could be used to compare and contrast the Mrs‘s or even the difference in the planets the children visit. I think A Wrinkle in Time would be best used as SR or a RA spoken by the teacher as this books has a lot of characters and this would best be used to organize understanding and comprehension. This online book file from Scholastic has so many different interactive and creative activities for students, so I definitely think this 6y
Laura.S @Ryanne.H I love that you stated to compare and contrast the movie with the book. Maybe the movie could be used as an incentive for students to read the book. After reading they could watch the movie and have a discussion about each mode. 6y

Two bobbies is a Henry Bergh Children‘s Book Award (ASPCA) biographical picture book. Two bobbies is about a dog and a cat left behind during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Filled with sweet moments, two bobbies shows children the importance of friendship, no matter the cost. This book would be best utilized as a RA. I read this book for our TeachLIVE assignment and the avatars were really engaged in the story, asking lots of questions. The RA

Giraffes Can‘t Dance is MF F about Gerald the giraffe that longs to dance, but his legs are too skinny, and his neck is too long. This book is a Parent‘s Choice Silver Honor book that teaches children to be accepting of people of all walks of life. http://readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/okay-different-teachi... this activity would be perfect to pair with this book as it

Ryanne.H Teaches the students in your classroom to be tolerant of diversity and helps them to develop empathy. For literary comprehension, this book should be used for LC. Using the UDL guidelines 9.3 and 9.1 students will be able to understand what is expected of a loving and accepting community and reflect on how they can treat others in the classroom. SkippyJon Jones, Lost in Spice by Judy Schachner is a Science Fiction picture book that is perfect for 1-3 graders. This book is about a kitty that travels to mars. Skippy wants to go to mars because it is red, and red means that it is covered in spicy red peppers. Students will love this book for its witty wordplay and crazy illustrations. Because this picture book has some lengthy phrases, it would be great for partner reading, so students can

Ryanne.H Sound out unfamiliar words together. Working together promotes UDL 2.1 (Clarify vocabulary and symbols) because partners can go over words they are unsure of and can point out things they previously knew. This best EL for this book is EL 32 (use student pairs for team learning) by pairing up El students with more advanced EL‘s for clarification. 6y
LisaMart @Ryanne.H I know you‘re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but oh my goodness how cute! I am intrigued! Not only because of the cover; I also love a good wordplay! I‘ll definitely have to pick this one up and check it out! Great post! (edited) 6y

If Chocolate Were Purple by Jen Barton is a Literary Classics Seal of Approval Modern Fantasy picture book about a world where chocolate is purple. This whimsical book full of rhymes is a fun story to ignite imaginations. Children will love this book for its crazy depictions, and will wonder with every page turn what outlandish thing will happen next. Because it has short simple sentences and is mostly filled with pictures, this would be great for

Ryanne.H Independent reading for advance K-1st grade. After independently reading, children can write/draw what their world would look like if chocolate were purple. UDL 9.3 (develop self-assessment and reflection) because students can then share what they created to the class and why they chose to write/draw their ideas. EL 8 (use direct instruction) teacher can model a chocolate purple world through visuals or drawings instead of independent reading. 6y

Interrupting Chicken | David Ezra Stein

Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein is a 2011 Caldecott Honorable Mention Fairytale picture book. Interrupting chicken is about a young chicken who is listening to his father reading fairytale stories. But Interrupting chicken decides that he wants to change the ending. This story would be great for K-2 for its references to folk stories, and will elicit many giggles every time the chicken interrupts.

Ryanne.H This book would be perfect for a Read-Aloud so the teacher can use different voices and expressions to capture her students attention. Afterwards students can try to read a book with a partner and have their own interrupting chicken. UDL 7.1 (Optimize individual choice and autonomy) pairs well with this activity as students decide when to interrupt and how to change the story their partner is reading. Freedom Summer is a Coretta Scott King New Talent Award Historical Fiction novel about the aftermath of the Civil Rights Act. This story is about 2 young boys, Joe and John and the trials the take together to overcome adversity. Because Joe is white and John is black, they have trouble doing activities together, but that doesn‘t stop them. It ends on a super sweet note, and would be great for Black history month!

Ryanne.H This book would be great for literature circles, as the text is more advanced and allows for a discussion opportunities. UDL 8.3 (Foster collaboration and community) is used when students discuss the book after LC and share their findings about the community in Freedom Summer. EL 28 (Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries)could be used for this book by showing black history month figures such as MLKJ & Rosa Parks 6y
DrSpalding Annie, this is an excellent book selection. I agree this would be a wonderful book to share with students during the month of February. Love You Forever | Robert N Munsch

Pickpick

Love You Forever, by Robert Munsch is a heartwarming, RF book that will leave you feeling warm yet saddened for its realistic description of life. This book has won the Parents Choice Gold Award and was listed 4 times on the 2001 Publishers weekly All-time Best Selling Children‘s Books. Love you forever is a story about a mother‘s unconditional love for her son, through his journey from adolescence to adulthood.

Ryanne.H Every night she sings him a song, proclaiming “I‘ll love you forever”. As the boy grows older he in turn takes care of his mother and sings the same special song to her. 6y
Ryanne.H This book would be a great choice for a read-aloud as the variations between text and song allow great movement to keep children captured in the story. The UDL Principle 3.1 (Activate or supply background knowledge) relates to this story because most of your students can share a time a their parent(s) showed them affection, and made them feel loved. For EL 38 (assign short readings for homework) 6y
Ryanne.H Students could take home a printed copy of the book to read with their parent(s) and discuss what they learned from Love you Forever. 6y

DrSpalding I assume you enjoyed today‘s read aloud. Excellent choice. Be sure to use the abbreviations for the genres. Look for another ESOL strategy that might better align with this particular book and choice of teaching strategy. 6y
morganhillman Ahh I love this book so so much! It is so sweet and all people, regardless if they are children or adults, love it!
