Wings: A Fairy Tale | E. D. Baker
post image
Pickpick

Wings by E. D. Baker (F) was the first “big” chapter book I ever read by myself. This book is about a young girl who suddenly turns into a fairy and a young boy who struggles to understand why he is so different from everyone. Wings is a charming story that is near and dear to my heart, and I would use it as an LC option. #LAE3414sp19

audrey.wilson In the story, the main character Tamisin grows wings! https://www.education.com/lesson-plan/life-cycle-of-a-butterfly/  This link is how to teach the life cycle of a butterfly. I thought this lesson plan to be appropriate with this book because it takes fantasy and then uses elements of the story into science.
5y
audrey.wilson UDL strategy 4.1, vary the methods for response and navigation, Wings jumps around with who is telling the story, it also does not follow a linear timeline, because the book is not a typical story structure I would need to implement 4.1 to help my students. ESOL 1, teach questioning for clarification, also is necessary for this book.
5y
melindamcmullen84 This book sounds like something my daughter would love and I love how you incorporated butterflies into this lesson. Perfect time for spring :) 5y

Kcallihan Audrey, this book sounds so so cute! I definitely want to add this to my future books to read. I think that using LC‘s is a very good idea for this book because since it is a “chapter book” I think it would help for the students to debrief in small groups! 5y
ally11301 This book sounds so cute and I would totally read it just by your description of it! I think the LC is a great idea and I absolutely love how you mentioned that the main character grows wings and how you attached a content area into your lesson plan! 5y
SofiaRoselli This book sounds so cute! Your picture also caught my attention and made me want to read it! Super cute and fun!! 5y

Percy Jackson: The Titans Curse (F) by Rick Riordan is the third book in the Percy Jackson series. The Titans Curse won the New York Times Children‘s Best Seller in 2008. Percy, Thalia, Grover, and the hunters of the goddess Artemis go across the country to save their friend Annabeth and save the world. (If you have read this book, then I hope you enjoy my picture, I thought it was super funny). #LAE3414sp19

audrey.wilson Rick Riordan provides on his website, incredible resources for teachers to use when using his literature. This link is for a discussion guide that follows The Titans Curse and has ideas for class projects. UDL strategy 3.3, guide information processing and visualization, aligns perfectly with this guided discussion lesson plan. 5y
audrey.wilson I offered the second book, Sea of Monsters as an LC option, and I hope that my students will want to continue with Percy, so The Titans Curse will also be an LC option. ESOL strategy 6, continually monitoring students‘ comprehension, works well with the guided discussion lesson plan.
5y
MNelson98 I absolutely love the Percy Jackson series! When I was younger, I could not put them down. I wrote about the Lightning Thief in one of my post. I also used Rick Riordan‘s website. It provides so many great resources for teachers to use 5y

Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum by Megan McCarthy is an adorable NF that your students will love! This book follows the story of how the perfect pink double bubble gum came to fruition. I would use this book in a partner read, and they can share the parts they enjoy the most to their partner, enhancing comprehension. #LAE3414sp19

audrey.wilson https://teachingstem.wordpress.com/2014/05/23/pop-the-invention-of-bubble-gum/ This is an AMAZING lesson plan! The students use their new knowledge of bubble gum, blow bubbles, and then use math to find all kinds of fun calculations through a little classroom competition. UDL strategy 8.2, vary demands and resources to optimize challenges, this aligns perfectly with the lesson plan. 5y
audrey.wilson ESOL strategy 22, give enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions. This strategy is important to remember with all children, and I feel it is important to remember when dealing with NF books. 5y
ally11301 This picture is so creative! Love it. That is a great lesson plan attached!! You did great on this post. Sounds like a fun book to read to the classroom with fun activities! 5y

A Little Princess | Frances Hodgson Burnett

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett (TL) is a heartwarming story that can be enjoyed by everyone. Sara Crewe is accustomed to a lavish life of wealth and luxury, and then she is thrust into a life of poverty after her father suddenly dies. Sara preservers with her active imagination and incredible spirit, this book is must read for everyone. #LAE3424sp19

audrey.wilson https://www.trueaimeducation.com/little-princess-book-study/ I do believe everyone could enjoy this story, it is very “girly,” so I would offer The Little Princess as an LC option. This link is to a simple, yet thorough lesson plan on following and analyzing The Little Princess. 5y
audrey.wilson UDL strategy 9.2, facilitate personal coping skills and strategies, aligns perfectly with this story. Sara must cope with the death of her father and her extreme poverty, and she copes through her friend Becky and her imagination. ESOL 38, assign short readings for homework, I would assign a constructed research for the students while they are reading this book. I would have them research things like boarding school, poverty, wills, etc. 5y
kennedimartin That‘s such a cute picture with the stuffed bunny :) 5y
cwright Even though it‘s “girly” like you said, I think the concept would be well-understood by all if carried out carefully like in your lesson plan! 5y

Ummmm I could not find the right book on this app but he is the correct author. The book I am reviewing is Swan Lake retold by Peter Clover, illustrated by Teresa Martinez

audrey.wilson Swan Lake retold by Peter Clover is the classic fairytale of the Swan Princess and the lovesick Prince Siegfried (TL). I used this book to conduct a predicting interactive read-aloud (IRA) for RED 4519, and I highly recommend TL for IRA‘s. #LAE3414sp19 5y
audrey.wilson http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/teaching-about-st... This link provides a comprehensive guide on how to teach story structure through fairytales/traditional literature. 5y

Counting on Katherine (B) by Helaine Beeker and illustrated by Dow Phumiruk, won the Vermont Red Clover Master List award in 2017. This picture book tells the story of how Katherine Johnson save the Apollo 13 mission. #LAE3414sp19

audrey.wilson I discovered this book when I was creating a DBQ for SSE 3312, and this book is a real gem. Beeker incorporates math, science, women‘s rights, and racial profiling in the workforce in one children‘s book! This book is an excellent choice for an RA. 5y
audrey.wilson This link is to a unit from Scholastic about how to teach the development of the space race/program in America. Counting on Katherine is a great way to introduce the student to a little bit a space history before diving into the entire unit. 5y
See All 10 Comments
audrey.wilson UDL strategy 2.3, support decoding of text, mathematical notation, and symbols, is all found necessary when reading Counting on Katherine. ESOL 20, list the most important words or phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation (or in this case, a unit), on a transparency or whiteboard. When teaching about the space race, many challenging words are high frequency. All students would benefit from a temporary space themed word wall. 5y
Channing_Austin @audrey.wilson I am so happy you read this book! Hidden Figures is without a doubt one of my favorite movies! I love that you used this when creating a DBQ! And you picked a great resource! I will definitely be using this book in my classroom! 5y
DrSpalding I, too, love Hidden Figures. Excellent classroom application however, while it is non-fiction it‘s highlighting the life of a significant historical person. What genre should it be? 5y
audrey.wilson @DrSpalding biography? So I‘m guessing a nonfiction biography doesn‘t count as a double whammy for genre points? 5y
DrSpalding Just biography...no double whammy!🤣 5y
sydneydaniels This book is a great way to integrate all different subjects into the classroom, what a great book to keep in your classroom library! 5y

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, won the Goodreads Choice Awards Favorite Book in 2010 (SF). I only read this book once, and I threw it against the wall and cried. It is the final book in the Hunger Games series, and I would offer this book as an LC option.

audrey.wilson https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/hunger-games-t... This lesson plan provides HOT questions that follow the chapters in Mockingjay. UDL strategy 3.2, highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships, aligns with the HOT questions. (edited) 5y

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, won the LA Best Children‘s Book in 2009 and is in my top ten favorite books (SF). This story follows Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark and their unconventional romance and stressful life. After reading Hunger Games aloud, I would offer this book as an option in an LC.

audrey.wilson https://www.brighthubeducation.com/high-school-english-lessons/56284-teaching-ca... This lesson plan provides excellent prompts for creative writing assignments based on Catching Fire. Can you tell how much I love this book? It‘s actually falling apart...AGAIN

audrey.wilson The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, a New York Times bestseller, is my all-time favorite book (SF). The story is set in the dystopian future where kids are forced to fight each other to the death in a TV show. The Hunger Games is so special to me, and I would use this book as a read aloud. 5y
audrey.wilson I would use this as RA, and this scholastic lesson plan accompanies an RA flawlessly! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/jeremy-rinkel/hunger-games-novel-... 5y
audrey.wilson The lesson perfectly aligns with UDL strategy 9.3, develop self-assessment and reflection. The lesson has the students answer questions and reflect on each chapter. ESOL strategy 13 also aligns with this lesson, use preview/review activities. #LAE3414sp19 5y

Before She was Harriet by Lesa Cline-Ransome, illustrated by James E. Ransome, received an honorary Coretta Scott King Award. This biography follows Harriet Tubman through her life, portraying all the things she was before she became Harriet from the underground railroad. This book is excellent for an RA. The illustrations in this book are quite spectacular. I will use this book for my reader's theater, and it would work either way!

audrey.wilson I would use this book to introduce the underground railroad before teaching. Scholastic provides a fantastic lesson on the underground railroad, https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/harriet-tubman... 5y
audrey.wilson This book follows ESOL 12, teach two objectives language and content. The word in the book uses a lot of vocabulary not often heard, like suffragist and liberator. The material about the underground railroad follows the book and the lesson. UDL 7.2, optimize relevance, value, and authenticity allows this book/lesson.

The Giving Tree | Shel Silverstein
post image
Pickpick

Nikki Boo is “giving” this amazing story found in Shel Silverstein‘s poetic collections, a kiss. I need a hug after reading this story, or a bunch of puppy kisses.

audrey.wilson The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a poetic story that is bound to make almost any adult cry. This story is banned from most schools in America due to its apparent “sexism” and “criminalization of the foresting industry.” The Giving Tree only has two characters, the tree, and the boy. The boy grows up and continues to visit the tree throughout his life. This book can be used for RT, and a different person can narrate the boy as he grows up. 5y
audrey.wilson https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/lets-grow-plan... This lesson plan is from, Scholastic and it is about growing plants in a classroom (1st grade). The Giving Tree takes care of, nurtures, and guides the boy through life. The students will take care of and nurture their seeds and help them grow as the tree did for the boy. 5y
audrey.wilson ESOL 32, use student pairs for team learning, especially for reports, experiments and projects, and ESOL 39, have students prepare collections of science objects. These strategies follow the science-based lesson plan. UDL 6.2, support planning and strategy development follow this book and lesson because, for the plant to grow, the teacher will need to guide and support the students in starting their plants. 5y

Edenmonet I‘ve heard that The Giving Tree is a great but sad book! I really like how your lesson plan integrates this book with science with the planting and tracking of the seed. I like how this book will teach the students about caring and nurturing something. 5y

Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan (F) won 2007,” Best book for Young Adults” award. I‘m sure that no one is surprised that I choose another Rick Riordan book, but I genuinely enjoy his work. In my future classroom, I intend to read The Lightning Thief aloud to my students. However, for the second book, I would offer this as a literature circle option.

audrey.wilson The ESOL strategy that accompanies offering The Sea of Monsters as an LC option is 2 and 4. 2 is promote cooperation (small groups), and four links lesson topics to students‘ prior knowledge. The prior knowledge stems from the first book and the following lesson. The background knowledge also incorporates UDL 3.1, activate or supply background knowledge. 5y

Zola wanted to chase the mockingbird, not kill it. She gives it 10/10 paws.

audrey.wilson To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a classic historical fiction novel. To Kill a Mockingbird won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961. This book follows the adventurous young Scout and her friend Dill, and brother Jem, as they become infatuated with the elusive Boo Radley. This book covers racism and discrimination, and at the same time emphasizes compassion, sympathy, and understanding. 5y
audrey.wilson To Kill a Mockingbird is a staple in American literature and can be a challenging read. I would recommend this book to be used for a literature circle. I would require all my students to read the book, but have them discuss each chapter in a literature circle to enhance comprehension. 5y
audrey.wilson If this book is used in LC after every chapter, it aligns with ESOL standard 10. ESOL 10 is teach think, pair, and chare strategies in cooperative groups. The LC also incorporate UDL 8.3, foster collaboration and community. 5y

audrey.wilson http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3749996 The character Atticus Finch, Jem and Scouts father, is a lawyer in To Kill a Mockingbird. There is a big trial in the book and we see the trial through Scouts eyes. 5y
audrey.wilson I thought that having the students partake in a mock trial (it can be about anything) would be a good way to use this book, from a civics point of view, and not a racially charged point of view. To Kill a Mockingbird is often banned from schools even though it is a crucial piece of American literature. 5y

Pink and Say | Patricia Polacco
post image
Pickpick

Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco is a historical fiction picture book. Pink and Say won the 1997 West Virginia Children‘s Book award. The characters in this book are loosely based on real people who fought in the Civil War. Pink and Say are two teenage boys fighting for the Union army, and they temporarily take haven at Pink‘s mothers home. They are eventually captured and taken prisoner by the Confederate army.

audrey.wilson Pink and Say works well for a think-aloud/read aloud because the language follows a heavy African American dialect. The story provides a more significant impact when read according to the author's language use. The reason this should be a think aloud is that throughout the book there are many Civil war terms and historical events require elaboration.   (edited) 5y
audrey.wilson https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/pink-and-say-l...
Scholastic provides a high-quality, engaging, and content-rich lesson that teaches children about the civil war through literature and personal analysis.
5y
audrey.wilson The ESOL strategies that follow this lesson are: teach note-taking strategy (9) and offer a variety of reference materials at the students‘ instructional level (29). The note-take strategy follows the lesson plan and KWL charts. The variety of materials involves reading many different books at different levels regarding the Civil war. (edited) 5y
See All 9 Comments
audrey.wilson The UDL strategy promote understanding across languages (2.4) aligns with Pink and Say. The reason I believe 2.4 aligns with Pink and Say is because the language use and different dialects are not typically used/heard today. It is essential students recognize the existence of dialects in languages and how to read and comprehend such dialects.

Belinda the Ballerina by Amy Young is a realistic fiction children‘s book. This book shares a valuable lesson of never giving up on your dreams. Belinda is judged by her big feet at the audition for the annual ballet recital. She almost gives up on her love for dancing after being told her feet would inhibit her from being a dancer. I would use this book for storytelling in my future classroom.

audrey.wilson This book works well for me to use as storytelling because of my dancing past. Before beginning the lesson, I will share with my students the story of how I was judged by my height, and quit dance because of my “difference.” 5y

There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms Taback is a classic. This poem may register as a bit dark for aware adults, it is always deemed hilarious by children. Wonder by R. J. Palacio is the type of book you cannot put down! I read it in one day, staying up later than I‘m proud to finish this story. Wonder won the Young Readers Choice Award and was then turned into a major motion picture. This tear-jerking RF is a story that needs to be read in every classroom across America. This book encompasses so many valuable life lessons.

audrey.wilson The most applicable to the standard classroom is “just because someone may seem or look different, it does not mean they don‘t have feelings; nor does it give anyone the right to bully or isolate anyone.”This novel could be utilized in many ways but an independent reading for older grades, 4th and up, would be my recommendation. 5y

audrey.wilson The activity is called “Choose Kind,” and the PDF provides the teacher with ways to incorporate Wonder in different months to teach a different lesson. UDL 7.2 and 9.2 apply for this book and these activities. ESOL strategy 5, 6, and 29. #LAE3414sp19 5y

audrey.wilson @DrSpalding I love that I uploaded all of my comments from my unedited draft. Isn‘t that fun!! Thanks for the feedback, will fix in the morning. My apologies (edited) 5y
kennedimartin @audrey.wilson I also read Wonder for my second LC and I couldn‘t put it down! I agree that you could use UDL 9.2 if a student has a personal experience with possibly a sibling who has a disability or if the student themselves is dealing with coping and understanding their own diagnosis. Thanks for sharing! 5y
